Sign Photo Etiquette

What is the general consensus on posting images with recognizable signs (names/company/etc)?

Does it just depend on the location for you? For example, a factory in the middle of the woods versus a historical building that would come up with a single Google search.

I've been on the fence about posting a thread because of location sharing faux pas. In this particular case, everyone knows where it is. Even though it's not open to the public, it is on Google Maps...

If it's a huge sign or the front of a building, I typically just don't post the photo. Even if that location has already been put on google maps or whatever, it would only draw further attention to it. But, if it's a photo worth sharing and/or the sign is small enough (like a street sign), I typically just open the photo in an editor and blur or draw over the name.

My experience, especially on this forum, is to err on the side of caution. There are some master detectives on this site; not all of them are respectable explorers. I have locations where I choose to not post ANY exterior photos. Recently, I even took down an interior photo after another member talked to me. Because as soon as I put something online, especially in our public threads, it's there for the world to see. I have to acknowledge that there are people who are a lot smarter than me, who could put together the pieces and find/ruin a location because of something I posted.

I ask myself, what's more important? Getting acknowledged for my photos, or getting to explore with awesome people in this community? Part of belonging to the community is sharing my explores, but I am always balancing that against the risks of sharing. I haven't done it perfectly, and a good rule of thumb is to trust the judgement of people who have been around a lot longer than me.
