As far as I can remember, this is the first curfew enacted in Dallas in my lifetime (not including the shelter-in-place for Covid). I was walking into the downtown area yesterday when a couple hundred protestors walked onto the interstate and covered it in a giant flag, blocking all southbound traffic into the area.
It seems that the bulk of the turmoil in Minneapolis centers around the intersection of Hiawatha and Lake. There were a few abandoned locations in that area including the lot where that Target store is located.
That would be going back 15-20 years and before that light-rail line went in.
The Russian Foreign Ministry has taken this opportunity to remind the US that it does not comply with UN standards regarding the use of force by police.

Ouch, everyone's dunking on America.
I saw the Global Times, a Chinese state-run news outlet, claimed the protests were being masterminded by "vicious HK rioters."
It is certainly clueless, but in retaliation to US support of the HK protests. Incidentally I'm Facebook friends with two US marines who spent time in Hong Kong covering the protests last year.

Which is really funny because the opposition protests in Russia that took place last summer were anything but "UN standards compliance" from the Russian cops.
One guy that went out for a jog got his knee/leg broken after he got tackled to the ground. Many arrests with cops beating protesters just for being there, etc.

By no means does Russia have any kind of moral high-ground.
Russia has officially abolished the death penalty. Although it doesn't apply extra-judicial elimination of political troublemakers.
For instance, there's this rogues gallery.
The guy on the right is Boris Nemtsov.
Boris Nemtsov murder (2015) scene.
Just for grins, the street in front of the Russian Embassy in Washington DC was renamed Boris Nemtsov Plaza in 2018.
Posted by Steed My newspaper just got shit on by a ton of people online and by phone for publishing this editorial cartoon.
I don't think that cartoon is particularly racist, but neither is using the term tar baby to describe: "a problem that gets worse by any effort to solve it.". Although both are easily misunderstood to be racist.

The cartoonist does sound like a racist asshole, and it is weird we used a years-old cartoon. But I am mostly against how fast we caved to people's demands. Also there was no controversy over the accompanying opinion piece, which was in my opinion more stupid.

Marginally related..
Today was the primary election.
In the current climate, being a homophobic bigot will not get you re-elected. Incumbent congressman Steve King LOST the primary to a political noob.
Posted by Radio2600 So there was a big blow-up about how Anonymous Hacked the Chicago Police! and played NWA's "Fuck tha Police" through their radio system
The inDUHviduals are eating this up like it's some major hack and with no idea as to how ridiculously easy it is to do that.
Even more cruelly, some "stans" are attacking police with K-pop. We already tried the same approach with North Korea, and that's why they have a nuclear program.
Feenstra seems to have already been a state senator for 11 years, but good for Iowa!
I'm not usually impressed by tenure in the state legislature.
State legislature positions are mostly occupied by retired state employees and crooked businesspeople looking to make money off the state. The pay is ridiculously low. Only $25K a year.

That reminds me of when the NYPD learned about how Twitter works.
Anyway, back on topic, I've photographed a lot of protests and have found my UE experience to be particularly useful, especially in minimising visibility to police and getting onto roofs or other vantage points. I'll be curious to see how this affects you guys in the US.

Stealthy evasion is the technique here. Rooftopping, not so much.
The cops in Iowa like to own the rooftops. Maybe because they don't have a helicopter. Neither does the State Patrol nor statewide Dept of Public Safety have a helicopter. The State Patrol has a few single-engine Cessna 172s that they use (infrequently) for traffic enforcement.
Iowa has the most low-budget government I've ever seen.
The mall in Des Moines where the looting happened has a 6 story office building and the cops were on the roof that night.
That office building is supposedly haunted. The ghost is purported to look like a nun carrying a dead baby. I've never seen it. Before they built the mall, the ground was the home of St. Gabriel's Monastery which was demolished in the 1950s. The ghost story is that periodically nuns would get pregnant and they would bury the stillborn babies in unmarked graves on the grounds of the monastery.
Someone add the 3rd precinct in Minneapolis to the database.
It's simultaneously easier and harder to explore now. Police presence is heavy, but concentrated in one area. They've got much bigger things to worry about than you. Then again, you could get unlucky if someone thinks you're violating curfew.
