Im sure you guys are cool people with good intentions and I do like your videos. I think they're really good. But I personally will never respect what you do simply because of the words quoted above. Urban exploration should be kept way under the radar. The more popular it gets the more pointless it becomes. You guys just have way too many eyes on you. I dont expect you to understand or care. This is just my opinion.

Some harsh criticisms here! Arsytee, I’ve watched many of your videos and enjoy them very much. I’ll never understand why explorers post videos of themselves online (not hiding their identity), given the legalities of urbex, but hey, to each their own. Congrats on the lifestyle you guys have created for yourselves. I do respect the time and effort that went into building that. That goes for all the YouTube explorer’s who have done the same. There are probably many urban explorers out there who would love to have the opportunity to explore the world as you guys do. People like myself, who will never be able to explore the locations you guys film, live vicariously through your video explores.

While many urbexers are quick to judge, perhaps they should take a look at their Instagram accounts and ask themselves if the number of followers they have is perhaps an influence on what they do. I find it odd that many UER members out there have links to various social media accounts that have real names and faces attached to them. While they may not have “1.3 million” people watching them, they still have people watching them. Same difference, smaller scale.

The more popular it gets certainly doesn’t make it “pointless”. It simply makes it more challenging to find and explore new locations.

My 2 cents worth.

Sorry to sound crotchity but this stuff really does get annoying when it comes from within the community.

So, I have typed and rewritten a comment/response/thoughts to this 3 times and said fuck it every time and erased it, because what does it matter. You can't change people, you can only change your reactions and your own actions.

I'll just say, I've supported and backed you guys from before we had the opportunity to meet and I'll continue to do so.

Your success is well deserved and I wish you even more as you keep producing great content and doing what you both love to do!

I don't get the sudden hate for the Proper People here. I know they're some of the more famous urbex Youtubers but they've been around here for years and never made a secret of what they do, plus they have a (well earned in my observation) reputation for being responsible with information and not being self aggrandizing.

I'd venture to say a lot of people are butt hurt they didn't think about doing it themselves. I've always been a photographer and not really cared for video personally. However it's obviously more prone to popularity due to the prevalence of streaming, etc.

I hate youtube and I've probably only watched maybe a couple dozen videos on there (mostly lock picking and a couple from you guys if I really like you). I did however, watch a video about three years ago of an asylum that has stuck with me to this day when all of the other ones have faded from memory. It was one of the videos done by Proper People. The quality of their work far surpasses the other random youtubers I've clicked on over the years. It was really freaking good and I was impressed with it.

I don't know enough about them to pass judgement, but I wanted to throw that out there.

I would attribute this more to YouTube's changes to their TOS and suggestion algorithms that tilted the playing field in favor of some producers and kicking others to the curb.

My channel survived the shot across the bow where YouTube required 1000 subscribers and 4000 hours of viewing per year to continue in the partner program. I had more than triple that.

A few months later, my video started getting age restricted and deleted for being potentially inappropriate. Ultimately my monetization was revoked and nothing I posted ever violated their TOS.

I never really made much money. My best quarter was about $500, but it did recoup my production costs. I did notice that the advertising remained on the videos even after I was no longer getting a piece of the action. Those videos have all been deleted since then.

I still make YouTube videos for fun, but I don't put any actual effort into it. Just whatever crap I shoot with my phone.

As someone who has seen almost every proper people video, I'll critique them in 2 areas, the content, and the community.

The content is amazing. If there was a video that an urban explorer would want to watch in his spare time, the proper people would be it. The atmosphere, the shots, the music, and the narration are all on point.

Community wise, I can understand where the hate is coming from, but at the same time who gives a shit. Like honestly they are putting mad work into these videos, trying to be respectful as possible, and your hating on them. Someones always gonna fill every spot there is in the economy. For the proper people, its abandoned buildings / urbex films. Would you rather have some clickbaity annoying you-tuber name dropping every place they go to. I wouldn't. If anyone is gonna make urbex videos, the proper people should be it.

Keep up the good work boys, love your content.

That sucks, and it is really unfortunate. I'd say I would like to check out some of your videos but it seems like you deleted them or they were deleted by youtube.

Honestly, while it is annoying how youtube is, I for one say that while money from advertising and monetization does help contribute to the equipment you have and software you edit your videos with, the real quality comes down to the commitment you put into your videos and your own ability as a videographer.

I for one really just make videos and take pictures for me and my friends in my free time. I found that I enjoy it much better when the only person I have to appease is myself. I can only imagine what that would be like for 1 million people.

Anyway, Just my thoughts

Its not about urbex anymore when you forget the basic preservation rules in favor of monetary gain, likes and subscribers. At that point its just taking advantage of an interesting market

I think Michael and Bryan are stand up guys, I don’t understand all the hate... but with having a YouTube channel of any kind you’ll always have hate no matter where you go... a lot of the points shown on here can easily translate to most photographers on the social media platforms as well.

I agree completely. How many people die while walking through abandoned or dangerous places in order to capture a video?

But the video itself is mesmerizing.

Not many. The thing about urbex is that there's a kind of darwinism at play. If you're not smart enough to maintain decent situational awareness and properly compensate for potential dangers then you won't last long in this hobby.

I've long appreciated the quality and style of the content the Proper People create. My only issue is their recent decision to name locations which led to a particular DC school getting locked down after the news picked up their video. Naming does almost nothing to add to the presentation of a location and I'm not sure why they decided to change their policy on that.

I like doing research by watching YT videos in that they show me the shape the location is in, the sec situation, potential POE, hiding spots etc. Big advantage right there. Also fun to see locations in countries I don't have an interest in visiting.

Yes, there is always the risk that the uploader has blown up the spot as well, but if they don't upload, someone else will eventually anyway. I would say you have to determine case by case - how likely is the video to blow up the spot, how popular is the spot, what identifying details are visible, all that. I haven't watched more than a handful of videos from the channel so I can't say. I personally don't upload such videos publicly because of that risk, but I know others will do it regardless of whether I like it or not.

Photos are a better way to obscure information, but I have been getting more interested in seeing/making videos recently.

It's useful, but that's also the problem.

Worth remembering the UER TOS:

5b.
(V) When posting information about an exploration site, DO NOT POST HOW TO GET IN, or HOW YOU GOT IN. Also, do not post any photographs of the entrances you used (unless it's totally obvious like an open barn door).

Of course that only applies to UER members staying here, and not YouTubers who have found a way to monetise the hobby.
