(Almost completely) demolished Stamping Plant

Hey everyone, I'm new here and this is my first real foray into Urban Exploration (aside from when I walked through the tunnel that goes for over two miles underneath downtown of my city.) Let me know if I've done anything wrong in this post, or if I can improve it somehow!

This site has been used for vehicle manufacturing since the 1880s, and the current plant was opened in 1930. In 2011, a labor dispute between UAW and GM, then still dealing with bankruptcy woes, resulted in the closure of the plant. Looking at google earth imagery, the site was slowly demolished from about 2014 onwards, and now all that is left standing on the 90-acre property is a skeleton of part of what I assume was the central production line.

When compared to the surrounding area where the rest of the plant used to be, what remains seems tiny. In person, though, it was huge! The standing section was around 25 meters wide and looked to be about as tall, and google earth puts it at 250 meters long! There was nothing left of the equipment or anything, and the building used to be much much larger, so I'm not really sure why they left this section standing.

You can see here the general structure of the roof. There are what look to be adjustable windows, or at least vents, in the roof.

A shot of the roof on the open west end. You can see there are still some scattered pipes and wires.

There was a wider section here that looked like vehicles might have driven through here?

This end had the only remaining windows. Most were cracked or shattered, and there was lots of glass on the ground underneath it. Some appeared to be green, I don't know if they were actually a different color or if they were discolored by the weather for some reason.

A shot of the east end, where the windows were and where some structure remained in the middle. I wonder what caused those dents and bends in the beams under the window and across the end? You can also see my bike under the second to last beam on the windows as scale.

Beyond the east end, some of the foundation still had tiled floor, in several different styles. This was under where I think the main entrance/facade of the plant was, so I assume these were bathrooms or something, though I'm really not sure.

Now we get a little farther from the standing structure. The edge of the foundation extended far beyond what was left standing, and all along the west edge there were loading docks and stairs.

There were also train tracks that lead away from the western edge, and to the other foundation on the property.

Here's the only interesting part that's left of the other foundation, part of a train station! The rest of it was just a concrete slab with some debris on it.

This is a view from the far corner of the property back to the standing structure, giving an idea of just how much area this place used to take up!

Bonus content:

Under this metal plate was a pit that went about 20 feet down into water. I was not brave enough to stick my phone down far enough to get a picture, nor strong enough to lift the massive steel plate up.

On the north edge of the property there was this mysterious door. I couldn't see anything inside, it was blocked by debris. Not sure what this led to.

Nice job! My only thing with your post is the pictures are HUGE. If could downsize them by using imgur or Flickr to embed photos or just make a second copy of your photos where they are half resolution, that would be my recommendation!

Not at all, thanks for sharing! It's cool to see what was there before!
