Thoughts on Graffiti

How do you guys feel about graffiti? Personally, I think there's an interesting debate here. Sometimes, really intricate artwork can turn an empty gutted room into a fascinating bubble of creativity hidden from the drones following the sidewalk outside. Other times, it's an offproportioned dick tossed up across the center windows.

In my opinion, it has it's place among the decrepit, but there are definitely times where it's not appropriate nor fitting. Where would you guys draw that line (heh)? More importantly, I'm curious to hear your thoughts on why you think the way you do.

In my experience, the artists doing intricate artwork are also the ones tagging dicks when they have less time. More graffiti of any kind contributes to the broken windows theory.

I've been solo exploring since I was a lad, care to fill me in on the lingo? What's the "broken windows theory"?

That topic is really touchy.
I think exactly the same as both of you, on dicks and on art pieces. A dick can also be art in a way. You say there's place where graffitis are fine and some where it's not. I totally agree with you, and at the same time I totally disagree. Because what I think is acceptable might not be for you. This is a question of point of view and I'm curious to hear other's thoughts.

Steed : thanks for the link. I thought it was a member name from Big Bang Theroy adapted to urban exploration 😂

Interesting, I suppose I've always looked at it like it turns a boring wall into a cool wall, although I didn't consider the social effects of that happening. Now that I think of it, where one tag is put, more generally follow. But, when I see something like this, I generally don't run and grab my ski mask and crowbar.

Personally it really depends on the location.

I tend to like graffiti among other things in newer or bare abandonments.

1. A place like this could be what I'm referring to, an office area which was abandoned sometime around 2009.

2. Or, this empty abandoned warehouse which was also abandoned fairly recently.

3. Graffiti in a fairly newer abandonment.

However, when it comes to older, more architecturally and historically interesting buildings, I tend to like an absence of graffiti.

4. Factory used during WW2 up until the 1970s, not hit hard by graffiti, and gently decaying as time passes.

Of course, stuff like this is always in the range of "harder to access", and present a larger consequence for being caught on the premises, meaning graffiti writers are less enthusiastic on gaining entry to these types of places.

I know of one neighbourhood where a lot of the walls had nice murals, probably done with permission. Then taggers came in and scribbled over the remaining uncovered surfaces, including people's homes, and eventually they just tagged over the nice murals.

I think it's fine in plain RCP concrete drains and such because it can add character, but that's about it. Buildings, caves (unless already blown out like ToT) and especially brick drains ought to be left untouched for the most part. Of course, opposition decreases with art quality- a good artistic mural gets a lot more leeway than fifteen dicks and a swastika.

Natchraz is perfectly resuming my opinion on the topic. Altough I sometimes surprised myself liking some really well made graffitis in some architectural industrial place.

Do you think there is Graff communities like UER over the internet where they're debating the same topic?

I like graffiti. My pet peeve is when someone spray paints a penis over someone else's art piece.

I've always suspected there's some kind of site that has something vaguely like the LDB. Not sure if it's still happening, but for a few years Korea got a steady stream of visitors -- first from Europe, then later also from Australia -- who would come here for a few days, break into subway infrastructure, and tag parked subway trains. They always hit the same three or so subway depots through the same entry points, and it was clear the information was being shared somewhere online. They would always be caught on CCTV so they had to leave the country immediately after. It took a few years before the cops were able to catch some of the dumbest ones. Also, the trains would always be cleaned off before going into service.

It's got its place in my heart for sure. Speaking strictly of my taste, here's what I think.

I do have a good time reading the ridiculous phrases people write; a lot of them crack me up. Do I wish they weren't there? I don't know. I'd get a lot better photos, but fewer laughs, and I'm not sure which is more important to me, to be honest. Humor is a big part of my life. Stupid scrawlings I see with my friends become precious inside jokes. Case in point: I don't know anyone else who laughs thinking about a 1979 FORD BRONCO. Good times, good times.

High-quality murals & bombs are nice, but I definitely agree they are distasteful in some settings.

I definitely don't care for the dicks (apparently they can't draw vulvas), and really dislike tags, especially the ones that are straight up just bad handwriting - from "toys".

Toys? Is that a tag or something? Around here "hope" is a common tag.

A toy is usually a “graffiti artist” who scrawls smaller unreadable tags everywhere, and doesn’t have actual pieces.

To me it limits my photography subjects as I don't like to have tagging in them.

I have 100's of photos of actual graffiti art

and only one with tags.

I'm no photographer or anything, but what do you mean by this? From your photos (lotta cool stuff btw) it looks like you prefer to take photos of very specific things, in which case I could see how tags might be annoying. But, at the same time, don't they form cool backgrounds for portraits and stuff? There's a reason all the easily accessible tagging spots are littered with obnoxious glamour girls trying to take "edgy" profile pictures. I usually think a bright tag can bring a lot of color into an otherwise bland photo.
