Does the Philippine government have any other way of enforcing their laws besides encouraging vigilante murder? Because at this point I'm having doubts.

Kidnapping people and holding them for ransom at police stations?

School is closed indefinitely. Parents with kids in school are being thrust into the tutoring role. I'm pretty good at math, but I'm not a mathematician by any stretch of the imagination.

Yesterday they sent out some homework in the form of a math puzzle game.

My 9 year old calls my wife over to help with a math problem which goes like this:

Two numbers added together equal 22. One of the numbers is 6 less than the other. What are the numbers?

My wife didn't have much luck with it, so it became my problem.

I set it up like this:

22 = x+(x-6)

(22/2 + 6/2)+(22/2 - 6/2) = 22

14+8=22

Mind you, this is 4th grade math.

708 deaths in the last 24hrs in the UK. The highest total so far for one day.

That may sound grim, and it is, but there's a few important things to note. Actual numbers of confirmed cases are dropping only growing by about 10% more a day rather than the 20% we experienced the week before this one, and the number of deaths is well below what was predicted day-by-day so far, and it's only doubling every 3.5 days, slower than expected.

The chief scientific advisor to the UK government predicts we'll be able to start lifting some restrictions within the next few weeks provided we all behave ourselves and follow the guidance put in place.

I actually feel really bad for all you folks in the States who are watching mass hoards of people not take it seriously and carry on like nothing is happening, because when the rest of the world is in recovery mode from this it looks like you guys will still be in a mess.

We will be quarantined until at least July. Local PD is finally cracking down and handing out citations to the idiots still living life as normal and not heeding the quarantine order.

ACo and yes in healthcare. Very fortunate to be in an area of specialty that will continue to be essential no matter what happens. Are you frontline essential still?

Yes we are still at work in "rotation", we were ordered to stand down from any physical/strenuous assignment that would risk us being injured. Essentially we are "here if you need us". I'm not in healthcare anymore and very glad I'm not because a local ambulance company just laid off 400 people effective June 3rd.

Iowa doesn't have a shelter-in-place order although the State Medical Board is pushing for one.

The governor's reply is that 80% of the people still working would be exempt from a shelter-in-place order.

Exempt people would be in:

1. Healthcare and EMS.
2. Police and Fire
3. Military
4. Agriculture, ag services and animal feed.
5. Food sales, service and distribution
6. IT and Communications
7. Vehicle fuel, repair and parts
8. Building and systems repair and Materials

There's really not much left outside of some kinds of manufacturing. A lot of non-essential businesses are already shutdown by order of the governor.

As much as i don't like his politics our Governor got far ahead of this thing and shut us all down fairly quickly and then moved the national guard in to a couple different local airfields, put Humvees on trains and shipped them out all over the state to prepare if needed in the future.

MASKS.

In my infection control training, masks were to protect the patient, not the provider.

In the case of COVID-19, masks will have some effect in stopping asymptomatic carriers from spreading the virus.

We never wore a mask in cadever lab. It would have been nice to cover up the smell of the formalin, but hey. We had to wear safety glasses if we needed to use a saw.

This was all 30 years ago, so maybe the philosophy has changed, but if wearing a mask is to protect YOU from aerosols, then you should be wearing safety googles or better yet, a full face mask.

The big question is: What is the final chapter?

Does this end up like measles where one of four things happen to everyone:

1. You get the virus, you recover and are immune for life.
2. You get the virus and die.
3. You get a vaccination and are immune for life.
4. You totally dodge the virus.

Does this end up like tetanus where one of four things happen to everyone:

1. You get the virus, you recover and are immune for a period of time.
2. You get the virus and die.
3. You get a vaccination and are immune for a period of time.
4. You totally dodge the virus.
