Recreating Powerplant In 3D WIP

Its not really 'photography' in the traditional sense but what the hell. I'm working on recreating a turbine hall from a power station in Philadelphia in the Unreal Engine and figured if I posted it here.

Having never actually been there I have just 3D modeled from all the photo and video reference I have found on the internet. However there are still a few areas I have no reference of so I figured I would post this here to see if anyone on the forum has some photos or videos that they haven't posted or that I haven't yet found on the internet. Also If anyone out there in the general Pennsylvania or even North Eastern US has any great photos of overgrown/invasive plants inside abandoned buildings etc drop me a link lol. Reference photos of vegetation are really important. I'm slowly making my way through old forum posts but still send me a link anyway.

Anyways about my 'photos'... Its early on in the process so basic lighting, very rough models to block in the space, and no textures. Ill probably update this thread every so often as I make progress and eventually move it over to the critique part of the forums when I start nearing the end.

Awesome! I've got a few photos but they're of stuff that you already seem to have. Good luck on your project man, looks amazing so far.

Hey could link me the photos just the same, and on the off chance you went with a group link me their Flickr etc too . I just went through your past posts and Flickr and didn't see it.

It may look like I have it all put together but in reality there is a lot of guess work going on which can cause problems later down the line. And honestly the more angles I have of something the easier it is to do all of the rescaling and tweaking that still needs to be done before I move on towards finishing each asset. When it comes to reference you can never have enough of it. Thanks for the encouragement ;)

This is cool.
However I highly recommend squaring off the images.
It would greatly enhance the presentation.

I have more. But I'll have to dig to find them.

Also, watch the movie with Bruce Willis. Twelve Monkeys. Portions of it are filmed there.

^Those huge brass doors in that film are from the Chester Power Station not this one.
They still reside there today.

There's other parts that are from Richmond. Specifically a hallway that had psychotherapy on it. Among others. When the Bruce willis character, is escaping the mental hospital it moves from the actual mental hospital it was filmed at, to Richmond power.

Also, there is a time he is imprisoned, that is at Richmond also. Among others.

I've watched it, like, a dozen times. Haha.

They brought those doors over for the shoot.
The Chester station is the showcase power plant, the big daddy of all the coal burners from that era in the NE.
You have to see it to believe it.
Art Deco... it's grand.
I have pics of the doors at Chester I believe shoot in 2004... somewhere

Yeah I agree, I have squared off a few as a test for thumbnail presentation and it really worked for some. However I'm doing this as a portfolio piece for video game art and as such 16:9 is essential. Portfolio renders are a strange beast. Since we spend hundreds of hours on a project like this we stay away from strong depth of field and very high contrast lighting because we want to show off our assets with their crisp textures instead of bluing them out or hiding them in shadow. All the while really pushing the other aspects of a cameras faults like chromatic chromatic aberration, adding in noise, subtle dust and scratches on the 'lens' etc because otherwise it feels too CG and therefore artificial. Ill add vignettes in later when I do the final renders though.

Interesting.
Of course artist goals are valid reasons to deliberately not square off shots.

First off thanks for the help guys! Looks like quite a few of you have been there So ill elaborate on the few remaining priority areas that I'm the most desperate for reference of.

1 This is the most important. I have very little reference of this water box (i think its a water box) and I don't have anything from a straight on angle.

2 Any photos that show off this lower walkway/catwalk area. I have no photos that show off this area from an angle that isnt from above and therefore hard to judge distances/positioning. So a photo that shows a look down the hallway would be amazing.

3) the left corner room. I had to cur this due to lack of reference photos taken from inside this area. I have plenty of the photos of the outside.

4) the Right corner room. I also had to cur this due to lack of reference photos from inside this area. I have plenty of the photos of the outside.

5) Lastly this corridor. Im assuming it goes back 15 feet or so and has two doors like the corridor further to the right. If you have a photo great, even if you dont have a photo if you happen to remember if its the same as the other corridor that would also be great info.

Unfortunately ill probably end up cutting the control room for time and because it isn't really super visible from the ground floor. The electronics are mostly unique assets that aren't used much if at all elsewhere in the turbine hall and therefore too large of a time commitment. I have spent 3 or so months already to get to here so I have started to make cuts to what I hope to finish. Thats partially why the water level is so high. It allows me to make the assets below the water line a lot lower quality as to take less time and will hopefully hide the fact that I really didn't have much reference down there.

I've only ever seen this place from the outside so I won't be much help, but I can't wait to see how this looks when you're done.
