Once in a while I come across an open receiving tomb in a cemetery. Back when graves were hand dug they offered a convenient place to store cadavers until spring. Its common for grounds crews to use them for equipment, but there's almost always cool funerary stuff left behind. 1.

I think those are plot markers. They mark unused burial plots. I'm not 100% sure, but I believe they pull them up when the headstone goes in. There's a potter's field in the one cemetery though too and they may just leave them in place when someone can't afford a headstone.

Wow thats crazy. Kind of looks like a hobbit hole from the outside. Any idea on the age? Also love how those saw horses were just left haphazardly.

The first one is 1870's. The other two, its hard to say. That kind of construction's been around for centuries. Pretty much someone just dug a hole, built a stone wall in it, threw granite slabs over the top and buried it.

Really cool. I see structures like that in old cemeteries all the time but had no idea.
