Ever had to use Pepper Spray during your explorations?
< on 1/23/2020 5:58 PM >
Posted on Forum: UER ForumQuote
About a year ago, I went exploring at an abandoned elementary school in Gary Indiana with my uncle. When we finished exploring, we realized there was a relatively big bull dog trailing us near the entrance of the school. We kept our distance, so it never attacked us and we were close by our car. But had that dog attacked, we didn't have much for self defense since we made the stupid mistake of not bringing any pepper spray. Luckily, I never had to use it in any of my explorations before and after that event. I think we just got lucky. Honestly, I wasn't so sure why a bulldog was just lurking around that area.

Did you guys ever find yourself needing to use a pepper spray (or any self-defense tools) on anything or anyone yet?

I carry it but have never used it (it’s the closest thing to a weapon I would dare to take while I was in the process of breaking a law).

For what it’s worth, I’ve heard that pepper spray is usually ineffective with dogs - especially if they’re agitated.

No. Never.
Never use pepper spray on a dog, it's inhumane.

If you can't handle one dog you need to reevaluate yourself.
Dogs can sense fear. Anger is far more useful than fear here.
And most dogs want to be your friend; it's hardwired into them.
Slowly back out of a hostile dog's perceived territory.
Do not take your eyes off them, face them.
Curse, yell, them they're a bad dog... and mean it.
Having an object in your hand works many times with a abused dog.
Back them up and back away.
Never run unless you're positive you can escape.

Ive dealt with dozens of dogs and haven't been bitten in close to 50 years.
You need to read them; make friends with the ones you can and back off the rest.
They can sense when you want to kill them; use it.
Never turn your back to a strange dog...

Packs can be deadly; a single dog you can take out if it becomes necessary.
They have only one weapon, break it the nose or jaw, ram anything down their throat.
Use your big brain, something they lack.
Unless you fail it shouldn't come to that!!!

lol are you effing kidding me? Inhumane?

Sorry but my life is worth more than a dogs discomfort.

There ARE violent dogs. People DO get mauled all the time. If anything pepper spray is a much more humane alternative to just shooting it or stabbing it or having to break its jaw.

and as far as handling a dog? have you ever SEEN a mastiff?

you're effing delirious if you think you could handle one of those charging you. Also if it were as simple as "handling a dog" the police wouldnt use them to literally take down bad guys.

But as Dionne pointed out it may not even be that effective. but you best believe if a little bastard is taking a chunk out of my arm or leg i'm deploying whatever means necessary to get it off.

I love animals. Hell, I am a vegan, but pepper spray is better than breaking the nose, jaw or ramming anything down a throat.

If anything spray the ground in front of them as a first resort, and they will likely get the hint due to their canine sense of smell.

Nope but this reminds me of the time some friends got seen going down a manhole and the cops, instead of doing actual police work, just showed up and emptied their oc spray down the manhole. The explorers escaped but were definietly not having fun anymore.

The bottle says right on it not to use it in confined spaces. ACAB

Get a hold on yourself.
You're afraid of something a fraction of your weight and intelligence?

I've faced off with 3 mean pits before and more.
How you handle yourself or don't determines the outcome.
Simply backing slowly out of their perceived territory works most times if befriending them doesn't.
Those pits I backed down with a knife; simply having an object in your hand and murder in your heart works.
I know because I've was gathering meter data for months walking right smack into the heart of their domain.
Some guys doing this got bite as much as twice in one day, TFF.

Never use violence or weapons when retreat and/or psychologically intimidation works.
Seeing a pepper sprayed dog rubbing it's eyes in the gravel is unacceptable just because lack of wherewithal

Need a weapon? Walking stick or 2 foot lead or steel pipe.
Or your foot; untrained dogs will bite the nearest body part. Offer your it your foot then drive it's jaw into the ground with all your weight.
A broken nose or jaws renders them weaponless and probably soon dead.
Some attack dogs are trained to go for the neck.
Police K-9s may sometimes do this if they perceive the threat is serious enough... get scared.

In general dogs are easy.
A pack of dogs can take you out.
Focus on the lead/alpha dog. The others follow it's lead.
Make friends with it, alls good.
Back it down, the other tend to do the same.
Don't let them get behind you.
If they start landing bites you have a huge problem that you need to turn around fast if you can...

Some can fight through the pain of pepper spray and so can an enraged animal.
Adrenalin offsets it's effects as does antihistamines like benadryl.
If the sprays blows back in your face can you function?
Or if the sprayed dog attacks anyway?
Best to try a small amount on yourself and learn your capabilities or lack of before you use it when it will count.

Oh shit. I guess it's way better using it on a human attacker. I did carry a flashlight with a blunt end used for breaking glass in case of emergency. But I can see that being a bad idea if police catch you carrying that. It's enough to easily crack a skull...

We sort of used that tactic to prevent the bulldog from getting any closer. It was baring it's teeth and walking slowly towards us. Luckily none of us acted too rashly since I know that never ends well. We were backing up slowly and I never broke my stare at it. It was enough to make it to the car and move out.
Pepper spray, if I ever have to use it, will only be a last ditch defense if one does lunge at me and the reaction time being very small

Same. I have spent hundreds of hours (not court ordered) volunteering at an animal wildlife shelter. I've raised several litters of raccoons, possums, foxes, and helped raise bobcats. I'm registered as an authorized wildlife rehabilitator with the state of Texas. I primarily worked with bobcats, and one time while cleaning a cage that housed a 40 lb bobcat with a mild case of toxoplasmosis, the tenant (affectionately named Lenny) got stressed by a neighboring enclosures cat with severe toxoplasmosis, and it lunged at my face, slicing through my nostril and narrowly missing my eye. it came to rest its claws in my chest where it began biting at my throat.

I punched the shit out of it.

I came back a couple weeks later and made ammends.

1.

I still have a faint scar that come and goes on my nose. but i'll never forget the flash of intense primal rage in that bobcats eyes.

But point being, regardless of how much you love animals, your safety always comes before that of an animals.

Also that's a great idea with the pepper spray as a preemptive defense line. Wonder if that would work.

Exactly. I stare the dog down.
Some say not to do this but I'm trying to intimidate it and pose a threat too menacing to take a try at.
Backing slowly out of it's territory is important; dogs are extremely territorial. It's instinctive.

I never carried pepper spray in my life.
Maybe in bear country but I rather have a large caliber/high velocity firearm for that

It's not fear, it's just knowing and not underestimating a threat. A venomous snake is a fraction of your weight and can do much more damage than a dog.

weight has nothing to do with the ability to harm.

Offer your it your foot then drive it's jaw into the ground with all your weight.

this kind of completely renders your humanity argument null. how is this better than temporary pain?

where as breaking something will have life long consequences for the dog. Not saying i wouldn't if i had to. just saying it makes no sense that you think pepper spray is somehow worse than that.

Also I'm pretty sure if you are trespassing and get caught after defending yourself from a dog, the legal ramifications for maiming or killing a dog is much higher than simply pepper spraying it.

I've had plenty of experience with pepper spray and CS gas. I spent a large chunk of my life in the US Army. Anybody who has gone through Basic Training has experienced the gas chamber at least once.

Also, I lived in Korea for seven years back in the '80s. I remember being near large riots in Seoul filled with CS gas.

Thing is, the effects of pepper spray don't last.

Thai peppers... they make your ears ring.
I can eat them whole same-same for garlic cloves, woof!

Remember dogs aren't wild animals; they have hundreds if not thousands of years of selectic breeding in them to be man's friend/guardian.
Take advantage of their hardwiring.
Most dogs want to be your friend if you don't threaten them or their territory or master.
A wagging tail with ears up is a very good sign most times even if they're barking.
Ears back, tail down; trouble.
Abused dogs are the worst and the most fearful.

If you can't make friends all you need to do is keep them at distance and back out.
You are practically a god to a dog for more reasons than one.
Use it.
Simply patting your leg and saying something in a nice tone can change the encounter completely to a friendly one.
I size them up somewhat by the breed as well.
Shepards, huskies, rottweilers, dobermans, pits, I keep a close eye on.

Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.

You keep surprising me! I had no idea.

I almost did that same thing years ago at the Boyd feline sanctuary, but they had a year commitment requirement that I couldn't in good faith agree to at that time.
I did volunteer at the Fort Worth animal shelter briefly, but then for reasons that baffle me to this day, they stuck me in the euthanasia lab. It was one of the more traumatic experiences of my life. I won't go into detail, but suffice to say, whatever people think about how we kill unwanted animals - it's much worse than what you're imagining. That was my last day volunteering with the animal shelter.

To answer the original question; no...though I do carry it, I've never had to use it. So far I've only had one stray dog encounter...abandoned nursing home complex, while I'm in the corridor of the (easiest) accessible building, I see a dog sniffing around the front door. I explore, take my pics, and debate on waiting til doggie (maybe) leaves, or just taking my chances.
This is a rather urban area...I look outside and see it wandering around. Meh, fook it, I go outside, and around the corner of an adjacent building, there he (or she) is. It looks at me, I look back, say, "hey, there" and start moving forward but slightly away...doggie is sizing me up, gives a bit of a growl, then a warning bark, and I slowly back off, and towards the main road. Dog lost interest in me, and skulked around the property, then (while maintaining a perfunctory watch on me) takes off down the road.
I'm sure other explorers have tried this, but what about carrying a few dog treats or sealed meat packs? Wouldn't work in every situation, might just serve as an appetizer with a trained attack dog 😲. (Like carrying spare cigs for squatters, sometimes it's all it takes to go from 'possible threat' to 'ok guy/girl who fed me)
I've never had to use food, but I do tend to carry at least some dog treats if not a pack of hot dogs or ham...makes for a good snack later, too (the meat, maybe not the Milkbones 😏).

That's awful! And honestly I'm not sure how or if our shelter euthanized animals. I never saw or had to help put down an animal there. It's run by one lady out of her own house (bless her heart) and only a handful of volunteers. At one point I and a friend were literally running it by ourselves for 2 weeks when the owner had to go out of state for some personal matters. It's the biggest bobcat rescue in the nation, and it's right in Terrell Texas. There's also a big cat rescue somewhere near there that houses (or did) Michael Jacksons Tigers, which i got to pet (and halfway swallow my hand.)

There was a pack of strays that decided to call the abandoned Toyah school home.
Between them and the hag across the street barking I decided best to bug out

I used to carry company supplied treats.
Only good dogs got them.
I don't like bringing food into the equation with an aggressive dog.
Don't want to be fumbling for a biscuit when I should have all attention on the dog.
Lol, a conflict of interests.
