The internet was a very different place back in 2009. Today people can easily connect through facebook, instagram, youtube etc. with little need for message boards. Especially forums that require you to contribute or meet people before you get to the bulk of content or the ability to add content.

A YouTube is a good idea. Why doesn’t someone make an official UER channel, that features photos that people submit? With they’re permission of course. It could bring new people in who otherwise might not have found this site

Yes if we learned anything here posting photos on UER and it's Great Satan; the UEDB is bad, gets locations vandalized, booby trapped, alarmed, locked down, put under surveillance, burnt down then demolished.

Meanwhile a YouTube channel is a good idea.

Case closed!

I’m sorry for putting down the idea, but it isn’t hard to find a building once someone has a full video tour of the place with all the “extra” stuff like drone shots and entry details added in too. In addition, I’d say part of it spoils the overall experience you gain from an explore. Doing something like that would only continue to stir up the UE community as well, since its not in the most stable condition as of now.

On a forum that has learned that photos tell too much info video is only worse in that regard.

YT is the easiest way to dox a spot. I can often locate a place in under 5 minutes after scrubbing through a video or two. Yep, I don’t even watch that crap or unmute it; I just scrub right through. Doesn’t mean I can get there to explore it any time soon but I do know where it is for later. I also consider research a huge part of the adventure.

Great thread AdventureDan. I have thoughts on this as I’ve lurked and/or been active on a number of sites for quite a number of years but I think I’ll try to gather them a bit.

Gonna have to big time agree with this one. Video on a platform like YouTube is just asking for it. I've been a member of this community for what seems like forever... It's sad that it's not as active anymore. I miss the good times in the chat room, and all the different discussions.

Maybe there's a way to mass email members? Ping them and see if they wanna come back? I dunno. But I don't trust really going anywhere else for legitimate UEX stuff. Reddit is Reddit, and the rest of the internet is filled with morons.

Well.

I first joined 7 years ago, apparently. Or at least that's what the star with a number in it seems to mean.

I've posted a couple of abandoned locations that I personally found very cool; a shut down fuel station/restaurant near-ish where I currently reside and an abandoned set of government ferry docks near my home town in Ontario. If I've posted more places I for one don't really remember.

UER is something that interests me, but it's not a career. If I stopped to explore every single location I've walked/biked/driven past I'd be a serial trespasser by now with a lengthy criminal (civil?) record.

As a sparse poster and lurker I've found myself endlessly entertained by the posts of others. I believe it's the site owner who posted some place that he has neither the time nor money to travel the world and explore locations and so he appreciates people from far away who post pictures (and stories) of their adventures for others to appreciate via their homes.

Over time I noticed the elitism that does seem somewhat pervasive here. I know I've posted and called people out on it from time to time, and maybe I should have stuck to being in the shadows. I took some time off from the site because I felt I was allowing myself to get drawn into the drama and was losing the sense of enjoyment I felt while browsing the site anonymously.

Apparently I expressed an interest in going to a meet-up right before I took my leave of absence. After finally getting access back to my account here I logged in and was greeted with this set of PMs:
1.

According to that, I was to be excluded from attending the meet up because I took said leave of absence. I was told that my behaviour on the forum was a contributing factor and then I was told to "keep exploring, make friends, and I may reconsider next year". The icing on the cake was him telling me to keep hush hush about his decision or else he'd go out of his way to ostracize me.

I convinced a friend of mine to travel to a nearby-ish city in I believe it was the summer of 2016 to meet 2 people from here to spend a day driving around going exploring and whatnot. It was a risk I decided was worth taking, and all things considered it was a productive day. I never asked for any gas money as I recall and the 4 of us had a pretty good time. Sadly I failed to keep in touch with these 2 people and nothing further ever came.

The point of my reply is that I wanted to say: If low-level (read: basic) members such as me are going to be treated like we're lepers by the high-level (read: full) members of this site then it's little wonder the site is losing traffic.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to leave this site. For probably a few hours.

It's the indisputable truth that UER has declined in recent years.

Web 2.0 (forums, web blogs) in general has declined.

I really appreciate everyone's input here. Just returned from a much needed weekend trip with some great explorers from here, and it really re-sparked my love for this hobby and community. We hit a lot of great spots and had a blast, but a lot of that time was spent at waffle houses and laundry mat restaurants swapping war stories and recounting rumors of legendary explores and the current state of the community.

Specifically i'd like to thank IndoAnomaly for his dedication to this hobby and the laborious research he continues to put forth to keep finding worthwhile spots, some untouched. Additionally keeping in touch with active explorers from here and social media alike, and recounting their triumphs and growth in their art.

Above anything else, I re-affirmed my belief that UER is the best platform for truly chronicling tales of adventure, and documenting locations hand in hand with history.

Posted by weifinder

That being said, as someone who exists on Instagram and Facebook mainly to connect with other explorers at this point, I've had a fair share of both positive and negative experiences with this current crop of explorers whose primary outlet is social media. Whenever I've mentioned UER to them, they'll either a) acknowledge its existence but express disinterest since their main communities are all on SM, or b) actively disparage it and its members as they've had negative experiences of their own on the site. Which, considering everyone I talk to is based in the PSW and urbex is a relatively small subculture, I'm sure some of those "negative experiences" were well-deserved in the end.

I haven't received FM, nor would I expect to since I'm pretty sure I have less than 30 posts here in the last 3 years. There's nothing wrong with how y'all vet folks here. They're just... not here. And from my interactions, I'm not sure most of the current generation of explorers should be here. Their groups are much smaller, but they don't have the same established camaraderie and trust you're more likely to find here. Locations are more likely to get burned. Drama is more likely to start, and it's usually for pretty petty reasons.

I'd like to think UER still serves a purpose, especially as one of the original online communities for urban exploration. But the current generation ironically aren't interested in learning about their own history.

Thanks for this perspective, especially of the disconnect between the current generation and the history of it's own sub-culture.

I also agree a youtube channel is a bad idea but in asbesto's defense he specifically said sharing photos not videos. It sounds like he was suggesting something more along the lines of a YouTube serial photo showcase. But I could be wrong.

Either way though I feel youtube isn't the best platform.

Also I believe the goal shouldn't be to segment into outside platforms, rather to gather from those platforms, and bring those users here.

We always run a risk when we post photos or videos on any public forum. It doesn't help when the original poster is "ego posting" and showing details that allow everyone to know its location. Often follow-on posters want to show just how in-the-know they are, so they post the location name or physical coordinates. I'm not sure this can be rolled back.

Yes, I've posted my share of mine names and I regret revealing only one of them. It got too much exposure and now is being randomly patrolled. The other mines I've posted were well known before I ever explored, photographed, or even knew they existed.

I'm sure there are a number of us who have our "secret" locations. I have a number of them that the only other person who knows about them is my exploring partner. I simply won't give them up, even to people I think I trust and know for certain would love to see them. It's a hard lesson to learn, but learn I have.

We all know that anything that is abandoned will be tagged, scrapped, or collected. Unfortunately it's simply the nature of humans. We can lament that fact but we can't prevent it. Enjoy each location as you find it, because the next trip will probably see more degradation.

At some point in this thread I heard a comment about "elitism". I certainly understand the feeling that there is elitism in the UE community, but I feel that it is often confused with the hard earned respect between seasoned explorers. It's not a hierarchy of prestige, but rather an acknowledgement of accomplishments. I spend weeks at a time looking for unexplored mines, traveled overseas and explored amazing locations, and spent time pushing into lost areas of some of the local historic mines. Just as importantly, I have spent a lot of time behind the scenes on this forum and in person, giving advice and training to new explorers. I sincerely believe that I have earned my place in the exploring community. Many others on UER have earned their place in the UE community and their exploits far exceed mine.

Sorry for the ramblings of an old lady,

Abby

It was a bit of an eye opener. I hesitated sharing those 2 PMs on this thread because I'm not here to kick up a ruckus. But then I reread the thread and the relies in it and I'm like, "yep, definitely some of this going on and I have firsthand proof".

If somebody doesn't like me, that's on them. I'm a pretty easy to get along with kind of guy, but I don't really take shit from anybody. And I suppose that attitude comes off as standoffish. Well, that's too bad I guess.

I was doing UER before I came here, so at the end of the day it's not a big loss.

but also this site is so dead compared to when it was in it's peak, I don't even think those groups look here anymore. Why would they when there's a million instagram posts of more than all the spots we share here possibly with the location tagged.
