Don’t understand the needless assholery, more of my thing than my dads thing after all. 40 year armchair explorers aren’t really the kind of people that I’d expect to criticize me either. Isn’t this supposed to be a site where I can communicate with other people who enjoy exploring, especially in the UE Main section?

^^^ This is for real. I fell asleep behind the wheel once and ended up hitting a median head-on. Fortunately, nobody else was hurt and I wasn't going very fast, but it still did thousands of dollars in damage to my car. I knew better and that was an incredibly stupid thing to do. Not quite as stupid as driving drunk, but pretty damn close.

When you're really sleep deprived your ceye hand reaction time becomes about the same as someone who is drunk. 120-200 ms or worse..
62-67 ms is a good repeatable score in a well rested, alert person.

This is what almost killed my mom before I was even born (for those of you that have seen my Altus, OK car thread in the South forum, they were in a Thunderbird when this happened ). Dad was driving and mom was the passenger. They were in the far left lane cruising along next to a big rig that decided not to check his blind spot before changing into my parent's lane. His hubcap drilled right through my mom's door and almost went through her. The kicker was that the guy didn't even notice what he did and just kept cruising along at the same rate of speed after the two vehicles became unstuck and my parents were run off the road. I've always remembered that story and I never drive next to an 18-wheeler (except to pass or slow down).

In conclusion.., my parent's Thunderbird didn't make it. I'm guessing it wasn't worth the money it would have cost at the time to repair it and they never located the trucker. This happened in the 1970's - before the government agencies and corporate HR departments had large stickers with neon 1-800 numbers affixed to every visible angle on their rigs inviting the public to, "Call us and tell us how we're doing!"

Not only can trucks veere into you, blowouts are common and explosively violent.
Objects on the truck can fall off... some can weigh thousands of pounds.
Saw a whole roll of aluminum along the road once lost on an entrance ramp by a flatbed.
Seen backpumping skids that slid off, they weigh around 1000#.
Smaller pieces as well that can go through a windshield.
Or water/vacuum truck hoses and fittings, bolts, nuts, house AC condensers, just about anything you can imagine.
A Mercedes was crushed a while back on I-20 when a free bouncing truck wheel smashed into the passenger compartment, she managed to survive uninjured.
Both leaking rock loads and rocks in their tire treads go flying as well.
Occasionally the bottom dumping trailers accidentally dump their gravel loads at speed; an instant pile of car scrapping gravel in the middle of the road
The ever present road gators can do a lot of damage if you run over one or one gets kicked up into your car.

Well this is uncalled for. Pear is a consistent useful contributor here. Just because you're 40 years closer to the grave doesn't mean you have to take such a personal shot at a younger member. His comment was neutral too. He's been a far better community member than you have for quite a while.

It's crazy that there's male explorers are out there who are comfortable with less than a knife. If you think there's any situation where you are 100% safe you're wrong. Especially trespassing. As a female I haven't left my house without at least a knife in the last 7 years.
When I explore I usually carry a knife in my bag, mace, and a stun gun in either front pocket(assuming all 3 are legal in the state I'm exploring in).
You can be as self righteous as you want but when shit hits the fan you'll wish you had some line of defense. You never know when you might encounter someone who is plainly bad that you need to disable to get away from.
I've never had to use any of these yet but It's good to have a fighting chance isn't it? I've had situations where I was ready to go and alot more calm knowing I had some lines of defense.
And the cops aren't going to charge you for legal weapons.
Ive been hard arrested and they stole my knife and stun gun but they didn't charge me because the weapons are legal and it never came up in the case.

Ps: certain jerks on here are making this website a lot less appealing for everyone else and should learn to shut their mouths.

I carry a ASP baton , it's more defensive than offensive and people really think twice when they attack you and you break there kneecaps, pepper spray isn't all that great because sometimes in small spaces you spray yourself and that is not good for getting away. I've only "used" my baton once and I just flicked it out on someone trying to fight me because "it was his smoking spot" just the flick is enough to get people to stop attacking.

Follow up to that, I would carry a taser, but they are illegal in NY.

If you're going carry pepper spray I recommend you try it on yourself in a small quantity. It's very easy to end up with it on yourself if you deploy it. Benadryl undoes most of its effects.
You can work through it which means bad guys can too.
Never use it on dogs; nothing more pitiful than a K-9 trying to rub it's eyes in the gravel. It's inhumane.

A pole weapon is better than a knife if you know how to use it ie an oak walking stick. Shovel handles work nicely if long enough.
Very effective with animals as well and makes navigating rough terrain easier.

Street smart means you take as many measures as possible to avoid physical confrontations.
Physical separation is the first line of defense.
Try to avoid being spotted to begin with.
If it feels wrong at the get go, bug out!!!
Spot bad spots fast and avoid whenever possible.

In crowds keep an eye out for wolf packs; avoid them.

Don't look like a victim or a bloody tourist.
Always have your shit together; don't have items in your hands, that slow you down or that can be easily grabbed.
Don't get chatty with strangers although some do use this I never talk with someone unless I need to or like them.
Some perps will try to size you up by talking to you, asking you for something.

Perps tend to be lazy and follow patterns.
If you can take them out of their comfort zone, many times it breaks the attack especially if it's before it goes physical.

Simply crossing the street or breaking into a jog is all it takes with some.
Look for escapes and weaknesses in your opponent at the start even if the situation seems harmless.
More distance means more time to think... use it wisely.

Ain't that the truth. Blackhawk and 2X have been taking any disagreement with their posts as a personal attack, and responded in kind. Those two have been toxic influences on this forum for weeks now and only seem to come on here to stir up drama or act condescendingly to well-respected and experienced members.

Looks who's bleeding brown now... you've given your share of bum advice Mr Redlight.
Personally I think you've been a goofy fuck from the get go.
Gave you a strike on FM... feel the wuv.

This is not a weapons thread.
Or a Pear bashing thread. Pear does better than some twice his age... or a couple years in one case.

Being street smart is an important skill set many here seem to lack.
I'm in the wild everyday. I driven a taxi for 3 years.
Have had many encounters in the last 10 years especially.
Yeah, this bastard has people skills.
Never been mugged, jacked or fucked up.
Some of you won't make to my age and be able to make that claim.
Pay attention you might learn something...

Changing this because I was given wrong info, I think blackhawk and 2X talk the way they do in best intentions but this isn't a site for bashing each other. We should focus on URBEX.

Thanks for showing your true colors at least. I vouched for you when you were in trouble, and it turns out you struck me down when I applied for FM for... what? I can't honestly think of anything besides maybe inexperience the first time. But I earned my FM despite your efforts, and I'd like to think I'm an established and at least somewhat respected member of this community these days.

As for my advice, the advice I give is what I've learned over the last five years or so of exploring, some I learned from experience and some I've picked up from more experienced explorers. I contribute to this community the best I can, and so do many of the others you've attacked.

We're not always perfect, but we try to make this a friendly and reliable site. And that's more than you can say, Blackhawk. Feel the wuv.

I don't owe you anything... you get what you earn.
You're trolling my thread and what you know is limited.
After half a century I should know more than you.
I don't agree with you methods and more than likely motives which seem to be ulteriorly self serving.
Cuddling newbies does them no favors.

Fuck a bunch of gypsy scum..

Blatantly not racist at all. 2X I'm sure you voted for the Orange Muppet back in 2016, aye? Can't wait to get the Wall built in Texas to keep you safe from MS13 gangs, I bet?

Can you just shove all your racist comments as deep as possible in your bumhole and fuck right off, please? You're a bully in here and UER doesn't need this kind of attitude, especially towards respected, Full Members such as Pear.

I've been watching you act for a couple months now, all you've been contributing on this forum so far is plain shit: personal attacks, racist slurs, bullying other members. No wonder why the newbies get scared away from UER with guys like you shit-talking all the time. UER doesn't belong to you, nor is it your own personal bullying playground, so stop acting like an utter cunt and show more respect to other members.

Now go on and roast me, papi.

I would definitely check state laws before carrying a baton while exploring. That can fall under unlawful possession of a weapon.

What 2X said about gypsy scum is spot on.
I don't have any doubt he's tangled with them in Texas.

A couple boys out of Louisiana set up shop on Wall st and Midland drive.
They were dressed like firemen complete with collection boots standing in the middle of the intersection just like the FirePolice do.
They were staying at the Excutive Suites hotel less than a block from the intersection and hanging/eating junk food from the Shell station all day long when they weren't hawking.

After 2 days and a few phone calls Midland police gave them das boot.
They moved to another intersection in another city.
Just one scam of many and right in your face.
The oilfield attracts the honest and the criminals as well.
The blue collar town of Odessa has had the highest murder rate per capita in Texas for decades.
