Opening in 1949, the Cobalt Refinery was built due to a increase in the demand for silver, but in the 60's, the owners were required to reduce the amount of arsenic coming from the chimney and were unable to, leading to the closure. The Ministry of Environment declared that if a fire broke out at this location, then all surrounding citizens should be evacuated. The site remains almost unchanged since 1997, except for the demolition of the main building. The outbuildings still remain, but it's a shell of what it used to be.
