I followed through on my threats to go to Rutland this weekend, and I ended up checking out what remains of the Leicester airport as well. Rutland, while infested by a gaggle of scene girls, was otherwise kind of cool. It's so old that everything is totally toast, but at least the graffiti is pretty cool:
There was also this weird room built into the side of a hill
And also this terrifying tunnel
Other than that though, there wasn't too much to see. So we headed to Leicester airport (which there is shocking little information about online, btw. It's difficult to even pin down when it was constructed and when it was shut down). I found this location quite a bit more satisfying. I was immediately impressed by the extent to which nature had reclaimed to paved areas
The main attraction here is this mostly caved in building
Probably the coolest thing there was this ancient soft drink vending machine, though it had clearly seen better days
There were also a few locked cabinets, and some accounting papers that apparently had laid undisturbed for 50 years
You could also walk out onto the vast caved in sections of the roof, which felt a bit like walking on the moon
On our way out, we saw an aircraft flying overhead. We took it as a sign from the ghost of this dead old airport.
That's all I got. Hope you enjoyed!

Shit. I'm too young to have ever even seen such a thing. That makes it even cooler.

There is a bar here in town with an old cigarette machine modified to take paper money. A pack is $7.00...

Great location. What's a "gaggle of scene girls" ? Where I live, a packet of smokes is $32

after years of neglect, the Rutland area is starting to be visited by the development demons. any locations there are on borrowed time.

There were a group of four or five teens with dyed hair and juuls running around. Think the kind of person to comment "RawR XD" way too much. To be clear they weren't causing any issues, was just surprised to see them there. Also, I grew up in West Tennessee, which has a decent number of tobacco farms nearby, so cigarette prices there get as low as $2-$3 a pack, even today. Was pretty shocked to see Boston prices in the $12-$18 range.

It's already pretty much toast to be honest, as you can see in the pictures. Still worth the trip imo, but the glory days are long gone.

they just had a shootout down there at the end of last week... the former mayor's son whacked his cousin up in Salisbury and then drove to Rutland and fired twenty rounds or so into the front of the police station. His spree ended in a shootout in the Amtrak parking lot where they (the rutland city & town cops) proceeded to ventilate the troubled chap permanently. Vermont seems to be chuck full of loonies as of late.

Not much left, always wanted to go here just to say I did.

How was it getting in here? Been running the gamut of northeast region posts and the public db.

Getting in to both locations is trivial, though actually finding Leicester air field is a little tough. It's rather hidden behind some brush on an unmarked stretch of road. Not really much there though, I didn't know better when I made this post but there are much more interesting things in the area.

The 50 year old financials sound fascinating to me but then... I’m an accountant. Did you actually see dates on pieces of paper or is that a guess? I enjoyed your post btw!

I went to Rutland Prison Camp a few months ago and couldn’t find the building. Where is it?
