Ever find booby traps when urbanexing?

Bombs. Deadfalls. Malaysian flying tigers. The old shotgun with the string attached to the door knob. Any and all are welcome. Post your booby trap stories, extra points for pics!

I found trip wires on several doors at the "Texas Superconducting Super Collider Thingy" they were not attached to any shotguns or other devices though maybe they had been removed.

Found a trap set with a large piece of plate glass ready to guillotine the next urbanexer to crawl through the window. Glad I didn't enter that way.

Large holes cut in floors and covered by throw rugs or door mats. Managed to avoid those as well.

Property owners are known to use some pretty devious devices to thwart burglars. Ive found more trail cameras than I can remember. At least I think they were cameras, tick tick tick tick..

yeah, usually in the fall when I would stumble into someones' weed patch... Daha down the hill had improvised explosives set up around his, the crazy bastard. Unfortunately, that idiot put his weed supply near a dam that people liked to fish at.

Thst's about the booty traps I have ever come across.

I've fucked up a few times with noise traps. I knocked over a 30 foot metal ladder inside a church sanctuary that the caretaker may or may not sleep inside. It was intentionally left on its side so the slightest bump would knock it down. occasionally caretakers will leave chairs in front of doors so they can tell when people have opened them too. But I've thankfully never been hurt by a booby trap.

Alma College (demolished) at one point had large amounts of grease on the windowsills and evenly spaced boards on the windows to discourage explorers from climbing inside (and resulting in a not so insignificant falls).

Here's a lockpick. It might be handy if you, the master of unlocking, take it with you.

Tripped a wire attached to a blank shotgun shell/bird scarer at a military site a number of years ago, needless to say that shattered the quiet of an early summer Sunday morning!

I went to revisit a site I did earlier this year a couple of months back, and while it wasn't so much a booby trap it was a trap of sorts, where security had left two inviting holes in the fence either side of new motion sensors attached to a post on the road between the holes - if you went through either hole you'd come out in direct view of it.

Best booby trap I've seen on an explore though was this, recently - presumably set up as an 'early warning' system behind the front doors when the property was being squatted in. If someone tried pushing that door open, the bookcase leant over and supported only by a spirit level would come crashing down.

There's one well known asylum over here where the local farmer has taken such a dislike to people trespassing across his land to get to it, that he went through a phase of pumping silage through the open windows on the lower level where people would go in, as after all nobody wants to vault through a window and land in knee deep cow shit!

I suppose more than a few of you have seen that video which was doing the rounds earlier this year of those guys in an abandoned house with the booby trap on the stairs? Where the knife attached to the crutch comes swinging down? Luckily they had spotted the trap beforehand and videoed themselves setting it off from a distance. Seriously scary stuff.

Double edged razors embedded in plants, trees, or woodwork where people are likely to brush against or grasp.
A nasty little surprise...

Open manholes in tall grass/weeds.
Another reasons not to explore at night and to watch every step you take.
Open wells are fun too

Keep a sharp eye open for eye hazards like a stiff wire at face level.
Best to always wear glasses or safety glasses especially in low light areas.
No joke.

Rebar that's not bent over and sticking up/out may not be an intentional trap but if you trip and fall on it the results can be lethal.
Be aware of your surrounding art all times and don't goof around in dicey industrial landscapes... always keep your eyes on where your feet are going when moving.
Always.
A missing steel staircase in a Atlas F site left me sitting on my ass on the second to last step to oblivion. A 20 foot drop to concrete.
Only fast reflexs and a good grip on the hand railing saved me.
Keep a handhold on hand rails on stairs and catwalks even if you got great balance. Had I not done this I probably been DRT.
Keep your hands, at least one free when moving in unknown terrain.
Shit happens without warning, out of the blue... and it can eventually happen to you.

♤Trust nothing♤

The Landmark brewery in St. Paul used to have tripwires on the stairs. Mostly rigged to battery powered sirens, I never saw any hooked to anything dangerous.

I've shared this before, my old college had "student traps" in the steam tunnels. They consist of a short section of steam tunnel with two doors, each openable from the outside but locked on the inside. Once you're between the doors you're stuck unless you prop one open or have a teammate on the outside. The traps have alarms on each door and supposedly some have a phone or button you can push to alert the cops or power plant workers that you're stuck there.

I'd heard about these from maintenance workers and from some students (I hesitate to call them explorers) who got stuck in one while tunneling drunk. I questioned if they were real (or even legal), but eventually my friends and I found one. We tested it out with people on both sides of the doors, and found out that it can indeed trap you. We set off the alarm while doing this so we quickly left the area!

Nowadays I'm always careful to prop doors open behind me if I think they might lock.

Turn off the internet and go play outside.

Not surprised. The steam tunnels under campus here have motion detecting cameras rigged to silent alarms, and with the kind of money the university has they can be made small enough to easily hide among the pipes and door frames. It's made gaining access a lot harder than it supposedly was a decade ago. I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if they have student traps here as well- especially after some dude got caught last year planning to use the steam tunnels to plant bombs around campus.

Ask Tunnel Bob about getting caught in the Mad-town tunnels. I'd be shocked if you didn't know about him Aran- if not, just Google Tunnel Bob. You'd think that would be a vague name, but the results will turn literally pages of him and his Madison fame. He gets caught just about every time he goes down there, but he just can't stop. I never met the guy, but read enough to know he has to be some kind of simpleton as he definitely hasn't learned from his mistakes. Accordingly to CCAP, he was popped twice just last year. Internet is filled with tales about him. Sounds harmless, but not right in the head. And I thought I was a tunnel freak....

Yeah, I've heard of him. He's a campus celebrity, and I often see him hanging around Union South and the Compsci building on my way to class. Dunno how he fits in half of those tunnels, he's probably around 6'8".

I can't say I've talked to him about the tunnels because I'm sure he gets asked that often enough and judging from an interview he gave the student newspaper (an old friend of mine was the reporter) a few years ago, he doesn't really want people down there anyway. Supposedly he's on the spectrum or something, because apparently he's rather socially awkward and terrified of women.

As for him getting busted I know he got arrested last year, but that was for jacking off in a public restroom, not for exploring tunnels. I've actually heard rumors that since the university can't seem to keep him out they just ask him to report anyone he sees down there and occasionally asks him to do minor maintenance like changing lightbulbs, but all of those rumors are just hearsay.

Circuit Court Access literally says "Unauthorized presence - roofs, tunnels, or maintenance facility". His entire record is all that same charge. $200.50 every time, 2x just last year. He has nothing on his record regarding lewd and lascivious behavior or exposure. I would assume that rumor started just because he is awkward, weird, and like you said, some sort of fear of women.

So.... To move back on topic... Do 6'8” creepy dudes with an unreasonable fear of women roaming tunnels count as a booby trap?!?

Huh, color me surprised. Him being arrested for lewd behavior was the talk of the campus meme page for a solid week last year, and everyone seemed to believe it was fact. Guess it was just unsubstantiated rumors, unless he was just given a warning instead of being arrested.

I dunno where he finds the funds to pay off those fines though as I've never heard anyone say what he actually does for a living, and I've seen him around at all hours all times of the week. I know UW Madison puts a decent amount of money into building security though- the rooftop of Bascom Hall used to be an incredibly popular roof to climb, before the university installed motion detectors on the fire escape and covering the entire roof. Nobody gets up there without permission anymore, not without finding the UWPD waiting for them once they climb down.

Still, sometimes maintenance leaves hatches open to the tunnels around campus, and many buildings have basement access to the tunnels via a maintenance room- I've found a few promising entrances myself I might try before winter kicks in.

People also still believe that Elvis is a alive, Michelle Obama is transgender, and Rod Stewart had a pint of semen pumped from his stomach....

https://wcca.wicourts.gov/ All it takes is a first and last name and before you know it, you are running the record of your high school teachers and the snot nosed weirdo that barked like a dog in 2nd grade. Regarding Bob's funds - who knows - but his fines are always paid on time.

If you plan on going down, it might actually pay to say hi to Bob and ask about how exactly he got caught. It might save you a hassle and fine. I would not be surprised if he was able to tell you what access is currently unsecured as well. I would love to tour them myself, but I am a bit of a puss when it comes to active locations.

Good luck - stay safe - post pics!

(improvised urban-exploder devices)

These have been around for at least 50yrs in some form or another, I had one similar with a ground spike that fired a 12ga flare round straight up (watch out for tree limbs)

I found one of these in a house in a ghost-ish town PA. Below is an image of a similar device sold on Amazon as a "perimeter alarm". The actual pic is on a CD with several explores from that trip and is no longer readable. Lesson learned *sigh*. The device was loaded with a .22 blank, but the trip wire had been cut/severed/disabled somehow. The trip would have been rigged only about an inch off the ground, and because of the proximity to the top step I just landed on, I most definitely would have set it off. The trip was routed through an eyelet on a baseboard so the device could be placed at head level. My ears would have been ringing for at least rest of the day, and I surely would have poo'd.
