I got actual food poisoning at that Perkins for Mouser Week 2018. It was pretty awful.

There have been discussions over the years about changing the Dinner Meetup from Perkins to some other venue. But that Perkins has been tradition for Mouser Week ever since the first one two decades ago. The Perkins was also pretty accommodating to filthy explorers and allowed us to take up an entire half (or more) of the restaurant each year for Mouser Week.

But it's alright. Mouser Week will continue to live on, and we won't even miss the crappy old Perkins.

Food poisoning can happen within 2 hours or up to weeks later depending on the toxin or organism.
salmonella incubation time is from 48-72 hours.
Out of season soft ice cream is a big source of salmonella poisoning.
Many people mistakenly blame food poisoning on their last meal when in fact the cause was days before.
Staph toxins will make you sick in 2-6 hours.
Some common parasites like guardia take weeks to manifest themselves. These are a real pain.

My food poisoning symptoms occurred approximately 48 hours after Perkins, so I'm fairly convinced they were to blame for some kind of salmonella infection. I had ordered a salad there, which is pretty common culprit for contamination.

Yeah you'll never forget salmonella.
Fever, so weak you crawl to the bathroom, projectal vomiting. You better have a bathtub or bucket when on the head because it's coming out both ends, violently.
The tip off it's salmonella is it smells to high heaven.
Almost impossible to keep any fluids down.
After 2 to 3 days it dies down and a week later your more or less whole again.
Fun times...
Typhoid is virulent strain of salmonella.
Some strains of it are much worse than others!

That's unlikely, but not impossible.
It can days, even weeks before first symptoms appear.
With salmonella, it's never the last meal you ate.
It's something from 2-3 days ago.

Only bacteria toxins present in large amounts cause symptoms within hours.
Typically staph.
Contaminated utensils wouldn't cause this unless the food sat for an extended allowing the bacteria time to grow.
Cooking destroys staph toxins as well.

Having a high frequency of people get sick more than just one visit to the Perkins makes it a lot more likely here.

Example:

"On October 12, 2015, a county health department notified the Wyoming Department of Health of an outbreak of gastrointestinal illness among residents and staff members at a local correctional facility. The majority of ill persons reported onset of symptoms within 1–3 hours after eating lunch served at the facility cafeteria. Consuming lunch at the facility on October 11 was highly associated with illness; No infectious agent was detected in human stool specimens or food samples. Hexanal and peroxide, markers for rancidity, were detected in tortilla chips and composite food samples from the lunch."

So to use the CDCs terminology, consuming food at the Perkins restaurant was highly associated with illness, as only those who ordered food (a minorty of those in attendance) were among those who reported adverse symptoms.

Um... Blackhawk? Why do you keep casting doubt on the notion people who ate at this Perkins contracted food poisoning there?

I'm not trying to start an argument here, but you keep saying "it's never the last meal you ate" and talk about the length of time it takes for symptoms to appear.

Did anyone here make a statement to cast doubt on their Perkins-caused food poisoning being caused by eating Parkins food at Mouser Week dinner?

In virtually every case I've experienced or witnessed, the symptoms did only appear approximately 2 days after eating at the place being blamed.

I experienced the worst food poisoning of my life on a New Years day a couple years ago. A few of my other friends likewise got sick. At first, we blamed the seafood appetizers we consumed on New Years eve (the night before). But like you said, it's never the last meal you ate. We realized that the only people who got sick were the four of us who had eaten at a certain fast food restaurant two nights earlier. Everyone else at the New Years party had not gotten ill. That was an excellent lesson in how long it takes to experience food poisoning.


I blame Perkins for my Mouser Week food poisoning because my illness came on approximately 2 days after Perkins dinner. And the only other people who got sick were - as Smurf said - the folks who bought food and ate at Perkins for Mouser Week dinner. The explorers who chose to order nothing got away with no illness.

Or simply too much fat for the GI to handle...
Fever plus vomiting are a good indications of food poisoning, simple diarrhea less so.

Not arguing
There should always be some doubt in your mind when doing this. Remembering everything you ate in the last 3 or longer is a bit hard for most peole.
Many times can a tricky task to tract down the source.
Worse the culprit is most times long gone.
Both times I got salmonella it was from soft ice cream. The ice cream had an off favor but didn't taste bad.
Yes, well... days latter I had my answer.
The off favor plus incubation time and it was the off season made it pretty probable the ice cream was to blame.

If had multiple people get sick that all ate the same thing there, that's a damn good indication.
Many times in a container of food only a corner etc is the source so even though many ate food from it only one might get sick.
Just saying it's not clean cut many times; most people don't have clue of the types of food poisoning, vectors, incubation periods etc.

Toxins from molds and fungus can also cause food poisoning symptoms.
Once got nailed by some green mold growing in a fresh container of yogurt. I shook it up before opening and didn't see it mixed in. Spat it out when it had a bleach like taste.
Too late, the small amount I ate made me sick a day latter.
After which I looked before shaking it up

giardia lamblia is one of the more common and disgusting ones caused by infected workers not properly washing their hands after taking a shit.
