I call this a "visit" because I really didn't get a chance to explore it yet. Only had my iPhone camera on me at the time. Due to work, I have a client in the general vicinity of this location I've been wanting to visit for a while. On my way to work I get the call and next thing I know I'm on my way to him. Initially I was going to just scout some ingress routes since I was in the area. However, since I told my boss I was going to a major metropolitan area instead of a mid-point, I had some extra time to kill. Naturally this turned into parking and examining the surrounding property. Then I'm looking at the best route in. Then I'm running across a field in khakis and a polo, trying to avoid detection. And then, well, you get it. This was kind of impulsive. Anywho, I quickly followed the trail of beer cans and I'm in. I didn't venture very far into anything since I didn't have my flashlight with me, and as you all know the phone flashlight doesn't do shit. 1) The first building. I took an exterior shot as well but my iPhone is being a PITA. IMG_1584 by Lead foot, on Flickr 2) The main attraction, I'm sure a lot of you know what this is. Interesting to see how overgrown it is in summer. IMG_1585 by Lead foot, on Flickr 3) 1st Floor Hallway. IMG_1587 by Lead foot, on Flickr 4) 1st Floor Hallway in the other direction, with flash. Tons of dust. IMG_1588 by Lead foot, on Flickr
This was pretty cool visiting my first asylum, and I look forward to doing a full explore in the near future. On my way to my car I had my first "oh shit" moment in exploring. I was coming through an area to the lot I parked in, on private property, and see three cars (not popo) pulling into the parking lot. As I'm coming out of the brush I hear two honks and go into fight or flight mode. I wasn't sure if they were for me but I'm not fucking around to find out. I speed walk to my car and gtfo, paranoid the whole time that they might try to block me in if they were the property owners. Obviously I made it out unscathed, probably at benefit to looking official in my work clothes. Still though, that got my blood pumping. The scariest moment came about 5 minutes later on the interstate when I noticed a small spider on my forearm. I'm an arachnophobic. That was fun. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Anyways, thanks for reading and stay tuned for the full explore with proper photos!

Oh, we know ;) Hope you get to go back and grab some more shots. Impulsive explores are some of the best.
Take care out there!

They should have never demolished Henryton. It gave all the locals a place to go. Now they've flooded and destroyed this one.

Nice first visit Leadfoot You were wise to bug out when the lighting got compromised. Trust nothing. Walking into holes in the floor is a real issue at these sites. Structural collapse from the side and above also happens. Always be wary of anything anchored to the walls and ceiling; anchor fasteners can corrode out of sight and fail by putting any additional strain on them. Water damage damaged structures are especially tricky. Whole concrete stairwells have collapsed killing structural engineers surveying them(Byberry).
Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in. | |
Hahaha does everyone here just live in the same place? This is like Reddit whenever somebody mentions that they're from [that one area north of this place with a lot of tech companies headquartered there, located in a suburb whose name sounds like it means "arrogant town"] and everyone starts going "Oh yeah I live right by that place" and I drive past there every day". Shoot, I wonder if any of you guys were among the other groups that I ran into when I went there last month!

This particular asylum is fairly well known. If anyone has been exploring beyond a few years then they have probably been here. That being said, there are a decent amount of explorers in the DMV area. Not as many as a bit farther north, but enough that you'll eventually run into someone.
