September 1985

Hi again!

This is probably one of my favourite places that i have found. It is rare that that a house is able to tell such a clear story of its abandonment, and it's even rarer that the story seems to end on a high note.

Usually time capsule houses seem to tell the same story, elderly person dies and there is nobody left that cares to take care of the house. But the 1985 house seemed different.

The house stands by a small country road, near an intersection that once had a store and a post office. Near is a small chapel and scattered around a group of other houses. Not quite a village, but almost.

I was a bit disappointed when i first entered the house, as the downstairs was pretty much empty, but when i went upstairs i was surprised to find a teenage girls bedroom stuck completely in the year 1985. There had been some vandals tossing stuff around, but it was all still there. The posters, teen magazines, books, clothes and toys from the 70s.

At first the room felt ominous, i wondered if the girl had died, but looking at the stuff another picture started to emerge. The girl would have been about 15-16 in 1985, she would have just finished junior high. There were application guides for high schools and vocational schools lying about.

So, i think she got accepted in a school, and instead of sending their 16 year old to live in a strange city by herself, the whole family moved. The calendar on the kitchen wall was left at September 1985, the start of a new school year.

The parent took their stuff from the downstairs with them, but maybe the teen didn't feel like dragging her "childish" stuff with her.

Dingo was a band that caused symptoms similar to beatlemania in Finnish girls during the 80s. Fittingly, on of their biggest hits was called "abandoned house" https://www.youtub...atch?v=U-Epc8Kw-RE

Nice shots; I really enjoyed the writeup as well, it definitely offers an ending with a happier outcome! I explored my first 'time capsule' house not long ago, it was an interesting experience...
Thanks for sharing!

Incredible find! There's something very deeply eerie about all the abandoned objects and writing in the girl's room. Awesome detective work as well investigating what's left in the house, I'm glad that it looks like it ended better than the story of most abandonments.

Give abandonment a reason for its sacrificial reclamation to nature. Love it. Remember it. Take a picture. Share it. Leave the decay to nature.

Thanks for the comments everybody!

The scribbles are basically a guestbook with messages and quotes from friends. some are famous sayings, some seem to be inside jokes.

"fairness is humans inner quality - Aamos"

" Merry Christmas to Jami from Pulu & Reino"

"Even a madman will pass for a genius if they keep their mouth shut"

"oh my, Jami and Pete..."
This is reference to a children's song that became a huge hit in 1983, about two kids who have a crush on each other. The chorus goes:

Oh my,
Minttu and Ville,
the two of them,
went to play tag together,
they just take care of each other,
and remember nothing else

It is....gloriously 80s https://www.youtub...atch?v=JNClPpIEX3g

"The secret to a happy life is that you can turn the million bitter drops that life offers you into a sweet soda"

"For my own darling- Emilia"

"Everything that can be imagined is possible"

"kiss Kiss"

Some things are written in Swedish:

"what should we do?"

"How many times must i say it, you are ummmm.....nice"

There is also some nonsense that i have no clue about, like "kutu Kutu", and stuff written in cyrillic which i cant read because i newer took Russian in school...
