Hi friends! We recently found this building near Oak Ridge, Tennessee (where the Manhattan Project was). There were warnings everywhere that the site had buried radioactive material and there was this door (pictured below) that housed something that was radioactive. Being from Oak Ridge (kind of) I'm pretty sure this place had something to do with either the Manhattan Project or Y-12. I'm not sure though, and I was wondering if anyone could help me figure out what it is/was? Thank you for reading/checking out the pics! 1.

Maybe listed as a superfund site. Goggle the address.
Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in. |

That site is really cool! love the way the skylights make it look like there's electricity on. Would be really interesting to take a Geiger meter out there and see how radioactive the area is.

The sign said state property so I'd doubt it was anything special. I've seen federal property signs on privately owned property that was previously owned by the government. People are just lazy and I guess it works better than a regular sign. If there was a real danger then they would have it secured better. Edit: Cool pictures! You always find some cool places. Edit 2: The superfund thing is smart. Or at least see who owns it. It's location could also tell you a lot, like how near or far it was from the actual project site. Also, after a quick map search it looked like they're tearing stuff down there. Anything left abandoned?

It's not unknown for the DOE to abandoned radioactive contaminated materials on site. Usually encased and buried. There are state lands open to the public that have these entombed in the ground below. These have warning markers not to dig. Some clean ups weren't so thorough even at federal sites and some are ongoing. That door... it looks well sealed. This true? So... what's behind the door? I noticed the ceiling is made of prefab concrete, strong and durable. During the 50's and 60's there were many smaller subcontractors that did work for the DOE. It may have been a small lab or pilot plant... maybe not well documented or even "lost". https://en.m.wikip...sites_in_Tennessee https://www.energy...sion/cleanup-sites

I've started to look up Superfund sites, apparently, there are hundreds around the Oak Ridge area. I can probably ask someone who works at the labs and see if they know anything!

It was such a surprise to see all those skylights. Some of them had the long plants growing down-it was beautiful! We talked about taking a Geiger meter out there, maybe we'll get to it this coming up weekend!

Yeah, there was a large barbed wire fence around the whole thing, but really it wasn't super secure. I'd love to take a Geiger meter out there, though and try to get into that room in the back. It's not being torn down, though, it's all left up! And thank you so much! I thought it was a surprisingly nice place for pictures.

Thank you SO much! That really means a lot, I definitely have been trying to up my photography game. I took these on an iPhone 8 camera, actually. I didn't plan on going here that day originally, so I didn't have a better camera with me.

You sure find some interesting places, great work! I need to travel west on an exploring trip soon... I like the reflections in the pools of water, and the lighting; and of course the door! I gotta wonder what's on the other side too. Thanks for sharing, great to see another set of pics from you! 😃

Ask or show too many and you may get it sealed or leveled if it was anything interesting. oops...

You confident that you didn't radiate through your ovaries this past weekend?
Haha, just kidding. Cool photos.

Oh wow, this is badass. Was the little window in That Door boarded up on the other side, or could you peek through? Keep us posted if you find out more!

The window to the red door was busted out, so we could see inside barely. Here's a blurry/awful picture of it 1.

So the burning question now is... what's behind the yellow door? If you do, don't stir up any dust... at all.
