Jen & Frank's Playpen

I wasn't going to make a thread on this, but seeing as the place was recently demolished I wanted to make a little tribute. Originally part of a larger group of buildings, this was the last one standing and served at different times as an infirmary, children's ward, and mental retardation unit.

On the second trip we moved into the basement to search for a mural I'd heard about online. We found this ominous bricked-up door as well.

I haven't been in the basement of that place for awhile, but there was a tunnel that connected that building to the others in Group 2 that were in front of it. When the other buildings were demolished, they sealed off the tunnel. You could only walk a certain distance before it ends. I'm pretty sure that was the door down there that led to the others. Last time I was down there, i was greeted by many cave crickets. A shame that building is gone, the playground area was very neat.
I was there the other day, they just a field now with a big dirt patch.

Fun fact, the other buildings in front of it were already falling apart long before the hospitals closure in 1996. When the place finally closed down, they were already in very poor condition, making them the least explored buildings, except for the building shots posted by the OP. Here is a picture I found off of the web of the building in front of it.

Thanks for the info DI! I thought it might be a sealed tunnel entrance, but I wasn't sure if it's their policy to do things inside the buildings themselves. I had read an account that talked about the poor state of the group prior to closing. Someone here once posted a picture from shortly before the buildings were demolished, they barely had a floor to stand on by that point. Would have loved to have heard the crickets, guess the sound of water pouring in from the rain is close enough. I at least I got to play hopscotch outside.

I couldn't find an exact date on the picture. Anywhere from the 50s to 70s, I'm guessing closer to the former.

Speaking of tunnels, I do not recall seeing steam tunnels going to that building, but i could have missed the turn...thats's the section of tunnels from the 1800's bricks and falling apart. But, definitely the walking tunnel.

According to the tunnel map I have (no idea if it's accurate), that building should have had a tunnel that led to the building directly in front of it, and from there to the main tunnel under the street.

There were buildings that were in front of this one. There used to be a large tunnel that would connect to them. At the end of the tunnel, they bricked it off with cinder blocks. I have pictures, somewhere. The basement ran the whole area of the building and the tunnel to the other ones, I believe was right under the main entrance.

This video was taken by a good friend of mine, in the beginning of the video, you can see where they closed it off. Once he goes through the smashed in cinder blocks, you are in the other 2 buildings that were torn down back around 2013 or so. They were very unsafe, as you can see the wooden flooring caving in.

Thanks MisU! What a coincidence this thread has replies the day I check in. DI, here's an additional pic if it helps. I'm not 100% sure but I think the doorway on the left is the staircase.

Thanks for the video Decayed Insanity and also the larger pic DOARope. I understand why it was walled off. Is is in horrible shape. The rotting stairwells look like an awful accident waiting to happen. I hope no one is crazy enough to try those.
