Just a warning for anyone who is thinking of going...the state park police are now ticketing park visitors and explorers in public areas of the property and even off the property for trespassing for no reason at all. But, they are not in uniform. They are actually dressing like "explorers"(hoodies, back packs etc) and approaching anyone they see and citing them for trespassing. I live like 35 minutes away from there and I heard about it from a friend, so just a heads up. I don't suspect it to last long, like other things they have tried in the past, but figured i'd spread the word!

Saw a video of them wandering around It makes no sense to me that they would be indiscriminately issuing tickets. Guess they're tired of playing games.

Can they legally issue a trespassing ticket in a public area? I don't know much about this place, as I'm not from the area, but thought it was located in a public park? I can see the buildings being off limits, but the grass and sidewalks too? I'd fight that ticket.

Nope. Not unless the building is enclosed by a fence or there are posted signs etc. The grounds, anyone can visit however the buildings are off limits. You can walk anywhere in the park without getting a ticket unless cops like those are out giving nonsense tickets. I personally think they were rookie cops who thought anywhere off the sidewalk was off limits. Back in the days when OMH patrolled the grounds (Office of Mental Health), you couldn't step one foot off the main boulevard side walks or they'd be on you like a hawk.

I was reading some more about this in a thread on FB from people who got tickets, it sounds like they just got desperate and started ticketing people illegally thinking it would stop anyone from trying to go into the buildings. Most people/kids probably wouldn't know the difference. Hopefully anyone who got a ticket fights it.
