Hey! This is my first post here so apologies for any protocol breach. I've officially only known about the urbex community for a couple years, and only begun to really spend much time researching urbex sites before visiting for maybe a year. However, I've been climbing up to rooftops, and wandering the forgotten, desolate, and off limits for as long as I can remember. Previously, I had a few friends I could usually call on to go exploring with me, but I moved up to Minneapolis a couple years ago, and now I am finding it a lot harder to find people to go exploring with. My main buddy recently dipped out on any real exploring trips due to legal concerns with the pastime. I don't think it is particularly advisable to loudly look for UE cohorts, and the few people who I know that I would trust to be discrete and- realistically- athletic enough to come with me, well, they have no idea why anyone would want to do this. I scout out enough sites on my own, and often go exploring by myself which I don't mind except for the fact that I do possess a small desire for self preservation, and recent injuries by myself have made me even more wary of soloing it. So in conclusion to that ramble, I really want to find some ppl in Minneapolis to explore the more risky places with but I am having no luck with finding people. (and I've been looking for around a year now) How do you all deal with this? Did many of you meet on places like this, or just have more adventurous friends than me?

If you have instagram I would look for smaller explorers in Minneapolis, since you're just getting started. Explorers with follower counts in the 100-500 range. DM them, and see if anyone is down to explore with you. Have a few locations that you found so they know you're not just fishing for locations. You can try hitting-up Free4all. He's a pro, and he's big in the Minneapolis area. He may not respond because he doesn't know you lol, but you can try. Look at his followers too, he probably has some other local explorers following him.
Take nothing but Nazi VHS tapes, leave nothing but footprints, drink nothing but Dos Equis. Stay thirsty my friends. | |
Welcome! UER is not a bad place to start if you're looking to meet up with other explorers. Many have done just that although it seems to be getting rarer these days. Most of the the local explorers who've been at it for a bit tend to stay away from the social media platforms, so I can't say I'd recommend looking there although it may be easier initially. In general, explorers here tend to be very weary about hanging out with those who post locations publicly to IG, youtube, etc as it leads to them getting trashed and sealed more quickly. Judging by the quality of your first post here, you seem to have a decent understanding of ue ethics. I'll pm you more.

Explorers with follower counts in the 100-500 range = Trust worthy explorer. *eye roll*

Welcome to UER Best to establish yourself here first over time by posting pics and posts. The friends will follow. Many females do go solo here. It teaches you valuable skills; self reliance, confidence and sound judgement.

My focus on laughable advice caused me to overlook the intent of the OP. My apologies. Welcome to UER Archangels!

The only problem with that is knowing when the meetups occur- most meetups don't seem to be posted to UER. I'd love to attend another meetup, if only I knew when the next one is. But OP, you're in a good city for this hobby- MSP has one of the biggest urban explorer communities in North America, though it is also known as one of the most tight knit. As a result of the city constantly sealing cool places, they tend to guard information carefully and be extremely wary of outsiders, if only out of sheer necessity. That being said, the explorers from MSP that I've met have been very nice people and responsible explorers once you get to know them. EDIT: Also, don't bother with Instagram. Many of the serious explorers I've met don't even have a UER account, much less Youtube or Instagram- and if they are on UER, they only pop in occasionally. Those tend to be the long time, serious explorers who make up the core of the community. Follower count doesn't determine trustworthiness- it only means they are less likely to show discretion.

Fair point, we tend to be a uhh... secretive bunch at times. But I do love meet ups, small or large.

THIS. Most of us in the long-time Twin Cities exploring community, us "grumpy old drainers" tend not to use instagram very much, and are pretty wary of anyone who posts exploring locations there. A high follower count suggests a lack of discretion, and thus less likely to be trustworthy. Your mileage may vary.

I have no idea who "Free4all" is, so if he's "big in the Minneapolis area" I can only assume he's "big" on instagram. LOL at the mention of his "followers."

He has a big loud youtube channel documenting all the things... Overall not awful work, but I am personally opposed to shit being online so I personally will not be giving them any more views.
Don't look on social media, find someone on the forum who appears to know whats up and PM them or wait for someone to reach out to you. Social media is generally frowned upon in this community, as has already been noted.

True story. Also my top choice for advice in this thread.

Ummm, UER is social media except it's tiered with limited access. Only FMs having full access. To be specific, we don't like insta-whores etc that get places sealed and trashed by their own vandalism and/or premature overexposing of sites to their fucktard "followers".

Yes, this is true. As someone who loudly and somewhat arrogantly proclaims their disdain for social media publicly, yet still uses forums, I should choose my words more carefully. In the context of this forum post, I am pointing to things like facebook, instagram, etc etc when I say social media.

Not knocking you. Exactly my point, this site doesn't tolerate the destruction of sites and members that do it like many other social media sites do.

I only explore with people who have at least 10k followers. thats the only way you can tell for sure that they are legit and not just posers.

UER is the best site I know of in terms of "social" UE. Certainly the only site I know of that has hordes of members that bandwagon to protect a site, and protest against those who don't. MyInstaTubeTweetFace can lick my taint. Unless they have 10 brazillion followers - then they are legit.
