Meh, never run from a dog or other animal predator unless you are -sure- you can get away.
Running away from a predator will almost certainly trigger their hard wired instinct to attack.
Best to face the animal and slowly back away/out of their perceived territory.
Avoid eye contact unless you know the ramifications of using it.

Yeah, obviously my above post was referring to humans. I'm not saying he shouldn't bring a fuckoff rambo knife exploring with him because a cougar's going to disarm & threaten him with it.

Bring so-called self defense tools with you amounts to bringing a security blanket. They make you feel safe, and therefore complacent. Bring your wits with you instead.

I know... but many people don't have a clue how to even handle* dogs let alone wild animals.

No one on UER has ever been killed by anyone other than by accident, disease or themselves that I'm aware of.

Be more worried about the terrain/building and what you are doing...

When I'm in an area that calls for it I keep a big can of hornet spray on me. It doesnt spray back like pepper spray, and has a 25' solid stream. You get that into someone's eyes and they are going to have a bad time.

Didn't happen to get the idea from this by chance did you? lol jk

I did not puke, but did dry heave AND slipped in someone else's puke as I pushed my way out of the chamber. Good times.

Yeah, I had something similar (but less intense) to this. Shit sucks.

All the talk about bringing weapons is pretty dumb. Just be mindful, be present, don't startle anyone and be ready to run if something drastically horrible is about to happen. I've explored some pretty crazy places and never had any real issues.

And as for weapons while exploring, I'd never bring any. I wouldn't want to be caught with something like that. But I'm always on the lookout for anything I could use as one, like a pipe, rock, piece of wood and even a handful of dirt. Most abandonments have stuff like that lying about

Wasp spray can be an even bigger legal can of worms if used as a weapon.

I think context is important here. Dude was robbing a store with it. In my case it would only be used as an absolute last resort. And if anyone needs a reason for me carrying it, I would say I'm deadly allergic to bee stings.

That being said I didn't realize using bee spray for self defense was such a common phenomenon. I may have to reconsider it. I thought I was being clever.

You should only use "tactical wasp spray" its smaller and easier to deploy in an emergency hobo encounter, I prefer the camouflage 6oz can, smaller lighter, easier to conceal.

Most tactical vests worn by urbexorz have a special pocket it will fit inside, that way it stays secure when you rappel outa da choppa, or if you have to low crawl through a couple miles of cactus and brush to reach your mission objective while evading capture!

My .45 automatic pistol is always there but just as a back-up in case the wasp spray runs out before all the hobos or boogeymen are subdued...

Don't litter, remember to dispose of the empty wasp spray can properly before extraction.

Anything you bring should be for the purpose of escaping because once someone is on you, your exploration is over and its time to go no matter how you get away from them. Knives might seem like a good idea but like other people are saying, they only make you feel safe unless you actually have training. Iv considered bringing little 1g flash powder "bombs" to distract and potentially disorientate should something really escalate that much but beyond the whole host of legal issues that would be should i still get caught, the designs i came up with where either a fuse system witch would take to long to light or a impact ignition system that might go off in my pocket if i fall on them wrong. So basically that never worked out.

The only wasp spray I’ve ever seen comes in a big ass can and I have enough shit to lug around with my camera gear, lol. Speaking of camera gear, tripods are surprisingly useful in a pinch. If you don’t have a tripod handy, I suggest my custom-made back-up:

The back-up should only used as a last resort.

In my opinion (although it's probably not what you want to hear) your best weapon is to be able to talk yourself out of situations. Most 'undesirables' you meet while exploring are pretty harmless and the ones that aren't usually want to steal something so if you nothing to steal there's nothing for them to really care about. Sometimes you do come across those psychos though but even then a brisk run will usually outpace whatever crack they're on. So I'd say keep the hornet spray but be prepared more for what you'll say not what you'll do.

If I think someone is hostile I don't say a word unless it's a warning like 'Get the fuck out of here!'.
Muggers will engage you in talk to gauge and distract you some times.
Putting your hand in a pocket is a mistake.
How you carry yourself is worth a thousand useless words... however sweet talking or cursing works well most times with dogs (and they can sense fear).
Each situation is different but your goal is the same; to avoid spilling anyone's blood.

Hornet spray is a bad plan and more useless junk to pack. A good solid oak walking stick is far better.
You can also easily out run any hornet or bee; their top flight speed is 16 mph.

The sooner you spot potential trouble, the better.
Distance is both a buffer zone and also gives you more time to think if they are closing.
Use it wisely and don't freeze up... look for escapes and weaknesses/weapons then act.
Anger is more useful than fear; you even run better when angry than when afraid.

In the end, I think the best thing you could possibly do is always have an out. Always have at least 2 ways you can run out of the situation. I do carry a knife but I treat it more like a tool. I think any situation you get in where you need to defend yourself, a 3 in knife is gonna be the last thing you want. Just run.

But if you are already bringing a camera with you, get the heaviest tripod you can find. No cop is gonna consider a tripod a weapon and that thing can definitely do some damage while also giving you a little more range than a knife.

A heavy tripod or even a light extended one will limit your ability to run fast unless you drop it.
Catch 22.
One potential issue with using a pole weapon is your opponent grabbing hold of it.
A tripod is a cumbersome pole weapon, ok for dogs.

What about your gear?
Is it light enough and secured well enough to run fast?
Many times the answer is no.
If you got a heavy cam/lense in your hand, you have a weapon.
A Mark3 with a 70-200 f/2.8 lense is heavy and even if blocked will hurt. I would purposely keep it gripped by the barrel and close to my chest at times when street shooting.
If someone wanted it... they get it, repeatedly.

Again if you're going somewhere were you think you'll need a weapon, you shouldn't be going there.

Be polite, friendly and nice.

10 years exploring and never had a close call really, either from hobos or sketch people, copper stealer etc.

The worst are srappers, but if you talk to them and say you dont mind what they are up to and are friendly with them , theyll be with you.

Ive explored in bad neighbourhood too...

I don't see why someone would jump on you for no reason and attack you. If the person is sooo sketch, just leave or run.

It's my personal opinion that bringing weapons while exploring is a bit like using a hammer. When it's all you've got, every problem starts to look like a nail.

There are very many situations in urbex where you could use that particular hammer, and very, very few where it would actually be a wise idea.
