After world war two, there were a lot of veterans with psychological issues and not enough hospitals to handle them. in 1945, the government allowed 1 billion dollars to build more hospitals across the country. and in 1956, they designed a 100 acre campus with 999 beds and its own coal power station. it was also decided to incorporate a natural lake on the premises so the patients could fish. the buildings were connected by miles of above-ground covered tunnels. to keep the patients occupied there was a movie theater/ stage, church, bowling alley, swimming pool, and gym. The facility became nationally recognized for its role in pioneering treatment of gambling addiction, substance abuse and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. everything was calm until the 1970's. the families living in the area were concerned about the power plant creating pollution. they had to constantly burn coal to warm the buildings and keep the patients comfortable. in 1971, the hospital admitted that it was creating pollution, and switched to oil and gas. they were also polluting the lake. it was eventually removed, but i'm not sure when. there isn't even any evidence of it being there anymore. also in the 70's there was convictions for theft and selling of prescription medication. they also had patients escape and walk around town on many occasions. in 1986, a former patient returned to the hospital and shot two unarmed guards. the VA decided that it had become too costly to run, and the hospital was shut down on the 50th anniversary of its opening day. since the day it closed, the city had been trying to acquire the hospital property. they had finally succeeded in April . these pictures were taken in march of last year, and the hospital was really torn up soon after i went. there were no guards the day we went. we spent 6 hours here and could have spent many more. almost all of the damage was natural. in the months afterwords they set up cameras and patrolled very often. its is now being prepared for demolition and will soon be nothing but a memory.

Unfortunately you'll probably never be able to reshoot it.
The pics are good for documentation.
Best to get in the habit of good framing/squaring off your shots; most times you get one chance.
After a while it becomes second nature and consumes little time but yields superior results.
I made the same mistake at first... and regret it.
Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.

This is the one place i am really sad i cant return. there was so much we missed. these are phone pics. we don't really have a good digital camera, but that's our next step. i think our group has all gotten better at pics since these were taken.

we couldn't find it! i really tried. i knew what building it was in, but not more than that. ill just have to get a bunch of morgue pics to make up for it.

You can do it with a smart phone. Of course with a cam, the bigger, brighter viewfinder of a pro cam helps a lot.
Shooting is a skill set that takes time to learn and perfect. Squaring up a shot is easy to learn;
height of lense center same as optical center where the cam is aimed, then bring at least one side preferable both L/R sides so they are completely parallel to the viewfinder L/R side(s).
You may be able to get permission from the demo contractor when demo begin.
They have complete control of the site then.
They may already be in control of it; they may be paying/doing the security.

Don't fret too much about not being able to re-shoot a place. Just given the nature of where we go, things will change constantly. Even going to the same place two days later will present totally different things for you to shoot.
There's no shame in using a phone camera or a point-and-shoot to document your explores either, if you so choose. I've explored with people who are just there for the fun, and don't invest in photographic gear. My first explores, I shot with a little Nikon point-and-shoot.
Make the best of what you have, and keep seizing the opportunities, just like you did with this great find!
