Well the main part of making a band is finding people to play with.

Guitarists - a dime a dozen
Good Guitarists - 1 out of 50

Bass players - 1 out of 50
Good Bass players - 1 out of 100

Drummers 1 out of 25
Good Drummers 1 out of 50

Of cousre these are just rough stats on how easy it is to find musicians for your basic plain vanilla garage band. You can have a band with none of these instruments if you want. Prolly be more interesting to see too. But anyway, finding people to play with is step 1. Chances are you already know at least 2 guitarists and a guy that doesn't know to play but is willing to learn how to play bass in your band.

Next find a place to play. If you still live with your perants then your golden. Take advantage of the garage. It will be your sanctuary. I practially lived in my parents garage throughout junior high and high school playing my drums. Now that garage is something I dearly dearly miss . If you don't live with your parents but have your own house then go for it. Hopefully your roomates and neighbors will be cool. If not you may have to rent a rehersal space to jam in. They usually run somewhere around 30 to 50 bucks for about three hours depending on where you live. Not free like the garage but at least it will have air conditioning (most likely).

The next step would be to play. Regularly. Like once or twice a week minimum as a group. The songs will come the more comfortable you get playing with your band. So much so that you shouldn't even have to force it.

That's all I can think of right now. Bottom line is playing in a band is a lot of work but well worth it.

I donno, i've been in tonnes of different metal and punk bands, playing both guitar and drums. None of them were very serious though, it's not like we were looking to "make it big" or anything. My only advice is to practice practice practice - it has to be a schedule that you all stick to no matter what. Find a good jam space, you might have to pay for one but it will be worth it.

Learn cover songs, you will need them. They grab people's attention. Play a set of your own songs, but throw a cover in there as well. At least until you get well known in your area. It just gets people's attention. Don't go overboard though. You don't wanna be like the local skeezy hotel saturday night cover-band or anything, playing "sweet home alabama" every night.

And what's wrong with that?

(just kidding, I can't stand that song because you hear it on the classic rock station here every 3 hours)

drums:=0 our biggest problem.

Two words: Drum Machine. It's working for my two-piece (a guitarist and me on synths).

I used to scoff at drum machines. Then again the only ones i ever used were pieces of shit. Nowadays I have a newfound appreciation for drum machines.

Drum machines can go faster than any human can and WILL NOT fuck up, unless you program it imporoperly or throw it down a flight of stairs or something... however you need a human drummer, for no other reason than to make fun of him.

Practicing every single day with no plans for future is pointless. I never understood why even waist time if stuff will not be heard by anyone except maybe few friends. But still while you playing your guitar of keyboard or drums....don't you dream performing at huge concert. If you don't you're a liar) I know so many people just are too lazy but trust me it's not that hard to perform live. Just a lot of socializing and having something good to present. Which brings me to main point. The is no reason to make cover band or sound like some famous band. It's waist of time. Be unique as much as possible. Plus another very important thing. ALWAYS BE PROGRESSIVE. Don't stick to only one style. Experiment with sound. And one last thing ...music and lyrics must be uplifting. It shell not be depressive.
