This was the final stop on my awesome five day trip up and around the northernmost reaches of the UK. On the final day as we made our way home I decided we should swing by this location that had been on my to do list for a long time but, with it being situated in the very far north west of England was always way too far to travel up from the south for.
This was one of a number of huge aluminium production facilities owned by the company scattered across the country and further afield across the world. In 2007 the company was taken over by another multinational which resulted in the shutting down of various arms of their business in the UK and abroad, with this one being one of the casualties.
This particular facility opened in 1940 and was responsible for the manufacture of alloy extrusions - pipes, spaceframes, anything long and thin basically. It mainly produced parts for the aerospace industry including the NASA Space Shuttle program and the Concorde project. It closed down in 2007 after the company takeover consolidated their assets into fewer sites.
The huge production floors have long been stripped of machinery and so are generally empty and boring. The real point of interest here lies in the large office/laboratory building in the middle of the site, the interior of which appears almost unchanged since the date the building opened. Sadly there is some terrible fire damage in the entrance lobby area which has caused a considerable amount of smoke damage along that part of the building, but looking past the mess made by the fire and the idiots throwing stuff about, it's a real gem of a building that would have been even better had it been allowed to decay completely naturally.
This made a great stop off point at the end of the trip, we spent longer than I expected here and so were battling the fading November light towards the end meaning we missed one of the large warehouse buildings. I didn't manage to grab many externals so it's hard to get a sense of the size of the place but it's bloody massive.

Very cool. Those arched skylights are a beautiful contrast to the dark remains of the building.
