This Kirkbride was started in 1868, but took 6 years to build. It started off as a good hospital, but soon succumbed to overcrowding. It treated regular, criminally insane, and child patients. It is known for its cruel treatment. Ice baths, insulin shock therapy, electroshock therapy, and lobotomies were common place. In its early years, patients took care of the grounds and the surrounding park. But after Thorazine was released, the patients just kind of walked around aimlessly. Most of the administration building is renovated, but more than half of of the building is vacant and awaiting renovation. 1.

5. The first part of the the campus we explored was the receiving hospital. it was an add on to the main building from the 30's. This is the building where Dr. Walter freeman would preform lobotomies twice a year. This building was vacated in the 90's. 1.

8. Then we found our way into the old female ward. I assume that this section was vacated in the 70's. 1.

8. As we stood at the end of this hallway, we noticed an odd door. When were about to go down the hallway, the door slammed and opened back up slowly. Behind the door , we found a ward completely untouched since it was first built. 1.

We're gonna get there. We don't need a whereabouts. |

What a great set! I have to say that the Sun that was painted on the wall is creepy as hell, and I think I will be having nightmares about it

Absolutely amazing. This place looks awesome.

Is the art gallery portion open?

It is. Although its pretty small and not much remains of the original 19th century architecture in the actual gallery.

Thanks! The sun is pretty evil looking. the peeling paint doesn't help. The whole children's ward was pretty eerie.

<you wrote>Then we made our way to the attic. Number 1. Electrical infrastructure on the left looks new, but is about 70 years old. Inside, away from the elements...

Great pics, and an awesome explore! I really like the lack of vandalism (perhaps due to the renovation efforts?). Thanks for sharing!

Is this publicly accessible? What a cool place!
You're not weird if you're not normal. |

The main administration which i did not show pictures of has an art gallery on the first two floors that is free to get into, but it is very small. You can walk around the building, but the insides are off limits.

Surprisingly none of the pictures i showed are renovated. the first building i showed pictures of has been vacant for nearly 20 years. But since it had heat, electricity, and water it look almost brand new.

Inside, away from the elements... | I think they added electricity in the 20's, But probably updated it in the 40's or 50's, and it hasn't changed since. All of the light fixtures are at least 60 years old and most being from the 20's.

It had running water? Not a good plan... A stunning site and some good keepers
Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in. |

Great set! Went to school nearby and spent a lot of time traipsing the grounds their. Good memories. Shame about the TB ward If you are nearby there is a lot of neat stuff spread around the grounds and woods still! A friend of mine even did an effort to find remnants of a vineyard kept by the inmates back in the day!

Spectacular location and photo set! My mind is blown by the lack of graffiti!

Too bad its been "sterilized". Pre 2008 Pennhurst was cool as hell because most of the room furnishings, equipment, toys, etc were still there. Even tools. Enjoy it while you can... it won't last.

That first section could have been abandoned yesterday. I'm impressed it hasn't been deface at all. Am fan, did enjoy!

Nice photos I like it when nothing is trashed it looked like the glass was out in the attic which would allow moisture intrusion. Whos TOYOTA RAV4? I got a 2015 le 2 wd last year just coming off a lease with 25,000 miles this is a very nice small suv although I was reading that the head lights just rate marginal but if you drive on streets that are lighted you should be ok I don't usually drive at night. Many cars have poor head lights this could be dangerous especially if your doing 70 mph you can stop in time before you hit a deer or road debris

First time I am seeing the place, but your shots are great. Loved # 13.
