I gave a homeless dude dressed up as Gandalf a dollar to put his arm around me and take a picture with me and my girlfriend a couple of years ago. Ah, I still cherish that picture! I also enjoy the food, Acme Oyster house and the Grape Vine for special occasions with my girlfriend. Ive always wanted to Urbex in NO but my time there is generally limited, I didn't have anyone to go do it with, and I was with people who didn't need to know of my little hobby!

I used to work in Metairie in the office tower right by the causeway. My hotel room faced Lake Ponchartrain. About dusk a couple times a month a couple of unmarked Bell 412s (Hueys) would land on the levy and a half dozen or so latino looking guys in fatigues and some white boys in suits would unload and come into the building where I worked. They used a service elevator or the stairwells maybe I never could get down there fast enough to see them or what was on their uniforms.
By unmarked I mean just that there wasn't any N____ numbers on the tail, no they were not "black helicopters" they were green, but they might as well have been black. This was in the mid-1980s and I supposed it was Iran Contra related VIPs or even black ops, found out later there was a DEA office on the 3rd or 4th floor. So still could've been Iran Contra related crap.
Unrelated I also worked in an office building on west 7th St in Ft Worth. We learned the DEA had an unlisted office there too when a tornado blew their paper work out the windows and all over town in 2000. A few of us recovered a couple large size mail baskets full of their docs and returned them.
They didn't even say thank you

Ahhh yes. The homeless here are a different breed. There's a cavalcade of them in a location in Bywater, and one of them is a drug dealer. I've heard his stock is... good.

I've been doing some research into the trainhopping/transient community over the last few days, an interest sparked partially by meeting a couple Australian trainhoppers a while back who were pretty cool people. Apparently NOLA is to trainhoppers what MSP is to us in terms of a cultural center from what I can gather. It sounds like there's some sort annual or semiannual meetup there.

Well that's an interesting development. I've been here 25 years and I've never so much as seen or heard about anybody train hopping. And train tracks run by like half the amount of locations. I've always wondered what it would be like to just hitch a ride on a train. And just go.
