from back in the day...

my dad recently sent me pictures of cars he and my mother had when I was a child. I thought you guys would find them interesting, or at best, clue you in to why my car choices are so odd.

he traded an 83 GT for that shortly after he and my mom separated. It's an actual 20th Anniversary Mustang. He did some work to the engine and transmission and converted it over to a 5-bolt pattern. I went to Ohio from northern New York in the backseat of that Mustang in 1987 or so (went to visit relatives and attend the Dayton International Airshow). It was sold around 1991 to a local girl who mercilessly beat the ever-lovin shit out of it. It now sits in her backyard, derelict. It hasn't run in at least 15 years as far as I know.

there are stories behind all those cars, humorously enough... the Caprice was my parents first (and my fathers' last) new car... it was a lemon, an absolute lemon and it was traded for a used 1972 Gran Torino sportsroof (just like the one from the film "gran torino". The Taurus was a car my dad picked up for next to nothing, put some wheels and tires on it and drove it back and forth to college after took a buyout from his job. It ran flawlessly for years and he gave it to his stepdaughter who wrecked it on a slippery road in Elizabethtown NY. She was fine, but the car was wrecked beyond repair. The wheels ended up on another Taurus.

The maroon car was an actual 1969 Ford Torino Talladega, one of 754 built. He bought it from Egglefield Ford in Elizabethtown NY in late 1969 and kept it until the mid-1990's when he sold it to a friend who had it reassembled and then sold it to a collector as there are less 200 Talladega's left. His was royal maroon, one of three colors available. (presidential blue and Wimbledon white, I believe). All were plain jane sportsroofs, bench seats, with a 428CJ and C6 auto/column shift combo... That's one car that my father truly regrets selling.

The red 79 Thunderbird, again, was purchased in 1981 or 1982 at Egglefield Ford. It had the distinction of being hit by a flying manhole cover while my mom was driving which destroyed one of the swanky American Racing wheels dad had installed. When my parents separated, my mother traded this car for a demo 1985 Ford Escort 5door. This car lived in Lewis NY until sometime in the early 1990's.

The 1971 Bronco was way too much fun. Dad got it for a song from a local guy and it had the distinction of never getting stuck at a local mud bog. In fact, it was often called upon to pull people out before the log skidder or bulldozer was summoned. It was nothing special, just a 302 2bbl with a 3speed manual. I ended up smashing the windshield out of it and my dad selling it. As far as I know, it was never driven again and the engine was removed for some ford pickup.

and lastly, the 69 Camaro... this car was an oddball. So odd, in fact, my father tracked the VIN # down and found out it was 10 from the end of production for 1969. It was british racing green (a rare color option), had stripe-delete, a white vinyl roof, 160mph speedo, the heavier-duty four speed manual, a deeper than normal rear axle and a 4-bolt 350 V8 with 4barrel. Also it had the larger Corvette wheels and larger brakes on it. Unfortunately, dad started doing a little freshening up of the car and found most of the quarter panels were made of mesh, newspapers and bondo which squelched the project. He sold it to a Camaro collector. I have no idea where it went after that. As a funny haha, this is the car my mother learned to drive manual shift on. I'm not sure the tires recovered from the lesson. ;)

Anyways, thanks for looking and reading.
