While I was looking at the lonely chair thread I thought some chairs are moved pre shot or staged for the shoot. Nothing wrong here but does it get done or do you do it?, moving something to include in the photo maybe.

I have moved things for pictures, but usually the sites I visit aren't exactly left abandoned without human interaction for years. There are probably right ways and wrong ways to do it, and it would matter more at some sites than others.

I haven't. I honestly have never thought to. I may move something to get a better shot of it because it was under something.

I staged this shot. It was in a 2 room beer cave. The gears were scattered all over the place, and I piled them up. If I could of thought of any harm I was doing by moving them, I would have left them alone.
Not the greatest pic, I know. I have been exploring for over 30yrs, but documenting locations is almost as new as my membership here. I am still using a cell phone. Some of the folks here are true artists behind a lens, and I am inspired to get a real camera. At least one I don't have to supplement with a flashlight and hold my breath to keep from blurring!
Give abandonment a reason for its sacrificial reclamation to nature. Love it. Remember it. Take a picture. Share it. Leave the decay to nature.

Occasionally but mostly because they been moved like play things by previous splorers anyway.
On untouched sites I try to avoid it completely.
At my favorite sites most things were too big to move
Note: At contaminated and/or unstable sites the more you touch and disturb, the more trouble you can get into... some things are best left as is!

Every now and then but judiciously. Will kicking garbage out of the frame make a better shot? Will rotating the item? Moving into natural light from shadow? But that's about it for me since I usually try to adjust where I am to get what I saw for the pic

I move obvious trash out of my shots, and I occasionally alter setups that have obviously been moved around by other people, but otherwise no.

I hate staging shots.
Other than moving obviously out of place rubbish from the shot I very rarely do anything to it.

In my opinion its always better to leave things how you find them.

It's more challenging to work with what I have. I have wanted to stage stuff in the past but I've never really allowed myself to. I guess it feels gimmicky.

I used to be opposed to moving stuff, but then thought... why does it matter? People most likely will move stuff before you get there, and they'll move it again once you leave.. so you might as well move it in whatever way makes your photograph more appealing. If you don't move the thing, the next guy in there will just move it and take a better shot than you, haha
Just use discretion so it doesn't look cheesy and don't move it if you think you'll break it in the process.
Examples:
With the help of a friend, we pushed this old aircraft out of it's crusty hangar, took this shot, then pushed it back in again.
I once used all the strength I had to turn over an upright grand piano that was lying face-down so I could at least photograph the keys.
I positioned the chair to be more perfectly in the centre, and pulled the bed just slightly so it could be seen at a better angle.

If you went to a location and saw stuff in a certain order, then you returned later and saw it moved into a new position, would you move it back to its previous state you saw on your last visit?

That's a good question. For me, it would depend on the location. Industrial/commercial, probably not. If it was a house and a framed pic or painting was on the floor that was known to be hanging on the wall or set somewhere, I probably would put it back.
Sometimes in cemeteries you see items set on top of head stones. I often find said items in the grass and set them back up on the stones....

My friend and I have been known on occasion to repair little things we encounter, such as putting loose vacuum tubes back in smashed televisions, tightening screws in loose window locks, or putting fallen coffee cups back on shelves. Nothing major. It just feels like the right thing to do.

I will to certain extent if the end justifies it.
Every one of these damn heavy pews were in a ramshackle pile along with the pulpit in the back corner. Maybe my friend and I took over an hour to set them all back up.

The church I wouldn't tell.
The other is missing dust, grime amd cobwebs.
It could be the front cover of Hunters monthly.

Like some others have said the only time I usually move something for a shot is to get a better or more clear view. I have staged scenes with other explorers, to say have them act as if they were working reception at a desk, or in the pose that they are about to ram into a door at a site where police training had gone on before(of course we didn't actually ram into the door).
I'm here for a good time not a long time. |

FuriousD, I stalked your flicker to see what your lighting was. For the red under the wings it says you used a gelled flash. How did you get the spread even? IE how did you keep it equal under both wings and not partially blocked by the fuselage? With 176 seconds did you just have someone walk it around with multiple pops?

I walked around the aircraft, firing the flash underneath the wings. I usually used 1/8 power bursts, and fire multiple times to spread the light across.

Hmm depends on how much clutter is in the picture and level of contamination. If someone who owns the property/the city is going to notice I generally leave as is. Woodsy areas I tend to move garbage. Packing out and leave the place cleaner than you found it.
