Animal Experimentation Lab II

Over the course of the last two months, I've returned to the animal experimentation lab several times, exploring it with UER users Yoyo and Dan Lee as well as on my own.

Further reading into the documents left behind shows that they were conducting research on a wide variety of animals, including sheep, goats, ponies, cats, dogs, and rats. Much of the research appeared to deal with blood oxygen levels. I believe that they were researching livestock genetics and how it related to blood oxygen levels under various conditions (injections of sublethal doses of hypoxia-inducing drugs, for example). It is also used as a vet school for students who wish to specialize in large animals.

The complex itself is split into three main parts- the laboratory, which was the focus of my last thread, the semi-isolation unit, and the farmhouse. Here's some more pics from the laboratory building.

There were far more documents than I thought scattered around the complex. I initially wanted to go through and photograph them all, but I've given up on that idea- it would take me weeks to get through the thousands of pages left behind. That stack of black books on the left are all official lab report write ups, for example- and each one is over a hundred pages thick.

This is a better picture of the barn attached to the laboratory building.

Even the insulation was moldy. That green layer covering those pipes was once white.

Here's the semi-isolation unit. Pretty boring, to be honest- just a bunch of empty concrete stalls where they'd put animals they didn't want to mix with the general population.

9.

This was the farmhouse, and it is quite possibly the oldest building on the property. It was originally used by the caretakers of the research facility, though that position has fallen out of use in modern times, as the city limits expanded and transportation improved. According to rumors, it is still used for K9 unit training on occasion. It's empty and moldy and the floor is suspect at best, but at least it has nice curtains.

So that's that for this location! I think I can safely say I've seen pretty much everything of interest at this point, and I'm still amazed at how pristine it is- not one graffiti tag or act of vandalism, no fire damage, no scrapping. I easily consider this to be the coolest location I've found so far.

You can see some of the pictures Dan Lee took here.

This must be in a very rural area. I've seen places like this in Washington and they're always off the beaten path and look to be molested only by time. Nice find Aran and cool pictures.

Surprisingly, no. Without giving too much away, it was in the middle of a semi-urban high traffic area, which made the complete lack of vandalism and graffiti even more surprising.

Aran, This is some of your BEST photos yet! Good Job. Love the bird carcass...the legs are almost comical and the windows in the farm house with sheer curtains are mesmerizing.

Thanks! The windows were pretty much the only interesting part about that house in all honesty, so naturally I tried to get some interesting shots of them. I'm glad I succeeded!

Yeah, Yoyo is pretty awesome. After we were done here we explored the old paint factory, which I took some shots of during another visit. It was great getting to meet another explorer, especially one with such in depth knowledge of the location.

The electricity was still on in some places, and Yoyo noted during our visit that though the building had been abandoned some time in the mid-2000's, the fire extinguishers all had tags certifying that they had been inspected in 2017. One utility room had a single lightbulb still burning even though the building had been abandoned for over a decade, and the exit lights were still glowing. We came to the conclusion that the owners (who actively and regularly use the buildings next door) must be doing the bare minimum "safety" precautions for insurance purposes- even though any decent building inspector would probably condemn it.
