The secrets of the legendary catacombs of Paris, a tunnel system that spans more than 280km in length.

The catacombs in Paris hold remains of more than six million people. They are part of a tunnel network that runs below Paris that is more than 280 kilometers long. No one knows how far the tunnels extend in total, as there are still many paths that are unmapped and even undiscovered. The main reason behind the tunnels was to extract Lutetian limestone for use as a building material. For instance, parts of the Louvre, the Place de la Concorde and Les Invalides were built with limestone from this tunnel system.

The catacombs only take up about 2.1km of the tunnel system and they are the only part that is legally accessible. Even though that is the case, many people refer to the surrounding tunnel network when speaking about the "Catacombs of Paris".

The ossuary was created in the late 1700s to tackle the problem of overflowing cemeteries and until the early 19th century, the ossuary was largely forgotten until it became a novelty place for concerts and other private events.

The network is mostly intact today and is regularily toured by urban explorers or so called "Cataphiles".

If anyone is curious about the way we took, the names of the rooms we went into and a bit of a sidestory, here's the full post (warning: It's damn long and I feel it would overcrowd the forums)

Also, even though I posted a lot of photos, these are not all, so feel free to check out the rest of them if anyone has gotten curious.

Awesome explore! I've only done the sanctioned tunnels years ago but these are much more interesting! I love that dangling microphone

I remember the thread you speak of but cannot find it. I did, however, find the picture I believe you are referring to
Apparently, she was at a party in catacombs and got lost. Tragic way to go !!

I remember the thread you speak of but cannot find it.

This must be the thread you are talking about:

http://www.uer.ca/...asp?threadid=68818

After seeing the pic you posted, I had to do some Googling. I actually found the thread from an article on Vice, and they had a link to it.

https://www.vice.c...h-of-catacombs-341

Super cool that Vice knows this forum. Although their story calls UER user Eugene http://www.uer.ca/...d=1&posterid=33639 a liar, and says the Masha story is BS. They go on to say that the official Odessa Catacombs website claim the corpse is a fake. Eugene hasn't been seen here since 2013.

If the story is true, it is just horrible. I cannot even fathom the fear this poor girl must have felt in her final days. Just awful. I am not so sure I believe the corpse is a fake. They sure went to epic lengths in its creation, if it is....

I have read tales of cataphiles taking adventuresome tourists down, only to rob them. I have even read that it is commonplace. I am now vaguely recalling a doc on the subject. I think it may have been a Steve Duncan doc on You Tube. IF I ever found myself in Paris, the only way I would do a non-sanctioned tour is if I knew the cataphile that was taking me in - which is almost 100% impossible....

BTW - if you do not know of Steve Duncan, search and check his vids out! He is kind of a New York subway urbex legend. Unfortunately, it does not appear as though he has been active in quite some time....
