So... What do you drive to explores?
< on 6/14/2018 5:16 PM >

What do you all drive to your explores? Is it a camper? 4x4? Van? Or do you have a street and trail?

I recently got myself a van. Aside from the gas mileage and stigma attached to owning and daily driving one I've enjoyed it! Haven't even scratched the surface of what I'd like to do with it but that'll come in time. I thought it'd be cool to strap a street and trail to the back for the hard to reach places.

My explore pack is my trusty steed, a 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee HEMI 4x4. If it include an overnight solo, I'll sleep in good 'ole Jeepy. If my GF or sons comes along, I pull a 26' camper....

Sweet rape van! I just gave mine up about a year ago. '96 Dodge B250, full custom with extended roof line - similar to yours. It was awesome. Park and sleep. Solo? no need to even pull the couch out. It was comfy. I finally had to give her up before the rot literally snapped the frame rail under the front passenger seat. Still ran, rode, and drove like a top. Only complaint I ever had was family and friends putting "free puppy/candy/video games" signs in the back window. Actually, I can't complain. I was amused. And the term "rape van" was born.....

lol! YES... It's hard going from a classic to a van but I don't miss being hung up at every gas station talking about my car. I usually get the "Candy van" comment. I'll learn to live with it.

I was also considering a jeep myself but this thing was too damn plush to pass up.

Plush.... Yup... Many replacements for Rapey were looked at before I settled on Ms. Jeepy...

Damn, Mr. Rapey didn't look half bad. Shame about the silent killer underneath. Probably for the best, looks like you have a killer setup now anyhow.

I typically ride my 2005 DL1000 VStrom. It's got 95000 miles now, and has seen a good 2/3 of the lower 48. It's off-road capable enough to get in and out, and quiet enough not to attract a much attention in the more rural areas I tend to frequent.

I drive my bus pass and bicycle to locations.

Needless to say, my range is somewhat limited.

I've used a number of vehicles over the years to haul us around the desert in our search for abandoned mines. For some reason I've always driven 4x4 vehicles.

I borrowed my roommate's truck when mine was being repaired. 1979 Ford short bed. Noisy, rough riding, and sucks gas at an amazing rate. But you just can't help grinning when you drive it.

My Trooper hauled me around for quite a few years. It was 4x4 with traction control and a limited-slip rear so it was quite good off road. It was also big enough to haul all the camping gear that I needed.

This was my "Purple Pig". It was a F-150 long bed 4x4. I did a lot of work to the truck and it was quite capable off-road. I added lights, CB, new stereo, and a lift kit. Even after all that work I never really got attached to the truck. Not sure why.

This is my current truck. It's an F-250 diesel 4x4. The thing is a beast. It's not a rock crawler, but we've gone places that I never thought we could (and probably shouldn't have). It's saved us a lot of long hikes to get to remote abandoned mines.

I am so jealous of the mine explore scene. I am obsessed with underground of all kinds, especially mines. Unfortunately, Wisconsin has very little in the way of mines AND 4x4 locations...

A Prius.

Everyone talks shit, but every cop believes I got lost if they find me. And they never suspect the exploring bag in the trunk. *shrug*

Go west young man! At least that's what they said in the old days. You are right that there is a LOT of 4x4 and mine exploring opportunity out here. If you could stay ahead of the mines getting gated, you could spend the rest of your life exploring all the mines in Nevada. Then there is California, Utah, Arizona...

You only have one life to live so don't get old regretting the things you didn't do. Unless you are "stuck" in Wisconsin, consider moving out west. Just be ready for some brutal heat in the summer and amazing weather in the winter.

I've been waiting a couple weeks to add to this thread, as I just upgraded my ride.

A bright yellow 125cc Daelim Besbi, which is basically a Korean knockoff of Vespa. I found it on Craigslist, for sale by an American professor who bought it for his wife, who found it too powerful for her liking. The price was great, but the problem was it was in Daegu on the far side of the country. I took a bullet train two hours south, and then drove this thing all the way back.

Here's the first helmet cam taken with it, on a trip through an abandoned US military base.

Also, this is my dream vehicle.

1.

2002 mazda protege.

It's nothing too special, but it has an oddly high ride height which is great for sketchy gravel roads. It's also good fun, manual transmission for life

Plus cops aren't gonna give it a second glance, looks like every other car on the road.

Nothing special , just an 01 ram van .... Depending on location , maybe a Honda scooter , or the tow truck if I want to look like a lost / lazy worker ...
