been that way for a long long time

if you have 60mi of fence for example you don't have to buy 600 No Trespassing signs and its politically correct and doesnt have to be printed in espanol too

(most English speakers never heard of it either)

https://codes.find...al-sect-30-05.html

out here in rural Texas you better know this stuff

I just ran across this and i have lived in Texas all my life... Guess, just never seen the purple fence post and maybe where i live doesn't qualify as REAL rural, but there are large farms and hunting leases all over near me. Thanks much 2X for the added info.

I've known about it. for some reason the purple poles/post have always made me more nervous then "no trespassing" signs. probably because I usually only see it in rural areas and don't want to get caught by a pissed off farmer.

Saw a lot of these out in West Texas. Toyah school has them.

I officially do not know what this purple paint means, and I am sticking with that.

It’s my understanding that the purple posts=no trespassing law was enacted primarily for hunters. It was easier, lasted longer than a sign would, and would be treated the same as an actual sign if posted properly (I learned about this only a couple years ago myself). I see lots of poles, trees, posts, you name it, I’ve seen purple on it somewhere. Unless you’re a hunter, most people don’t know about the law.

Many other states have similar laws, but a few of them use a color different than our purple color. I have no idea why Texas chose purple except that maybe it stood out and wasn’t used for anything else? Just a guess.

It may be worth mentioning, the official statute explicitly states that ignorance of the law and trespassing in these areas will not be treated any differently than it would had you walked past an actual ‘no trespassing’ sign.

Well you learn something new everyday. Most places tend to have some type of fence at least but I have not spent too much time in rural areas to notice.

I'm originally from KC, Missouri, and I remember from hunting safety classes that they talked about purple paint being a 'universal' sign for no hunting/trespassing...in fact, I recall a story about a farmer who got sick of idiots shooting his livestock 'accidentally', so around hunting season he would spray paint 'COW' in purple paint on his cows.

I learned this during my hunter safety course when I was a teenager. It really resonated for some reason. And I'm with fatwax, it makes me more nervous than signs.

I hunt, most times you see the purple "sign" where private property meets federal or state land like here at the Sam Houston National Forest. When you are dealing with property lines that can be up to a few miles long a fence is costly and hard to maintain. In some cases the land owner may have grazing rights so he will not have a fence up. It is mostly to keep hunters out, but maybe it would apply to anyone. I would have to do a little research on it.

It applies to all. The same implications as no trespassing sign.
In the case of a Texas state park the meaning may differ slightly as hikers can freely enter without paying an entrance fee.
Ignorance of the law is no defense...

everyone's a freakin legal expert

why not look up the state penal code if you don't believe me

its for trespassers and it says nothing about hunters, rugby players, circus clowns or illegal aliens, its just a way of saying NO TRESPASSING to everyone without having to buy 600 little orange and black plastic signs at Walmart

Correct, it means NO TRESPASSING, but most regular people would not know that. I know that because as a hunter we are told that purple paint means DO NOT HUNT ON MY LAND. I am sure if a hiker is seen hiking crossing the purple wall they will get fussed at maybe or maybe not. If I cross that purple wall with my rifle in my hands it is a very good chance I will have the law called on me and have some big problems. Trespassing while hiking is wrong, add a firearm to it puts it in a whole new world of wrong.

It means anyone. Most times it's on fence post and that fence means the same thing, a double warning.

Yes, but most people in Texas ( non hunters) have never heard of it. I just did a survey on my co workers, out of 8 people only one knew what it ment only because they have posts and trees painted on their deer lease near Livingston and you guessed it, it is to keep out hikers... No for real, it is to keep hunters out. So to the point, purple paint is a NO TRESPASSING sign, but lets be honest most of you guys will never see one unless you get out of the city limits and take a walk in the sticks.

Well for one thing, I don't live in the city limits. And I know lots of people who "don't hunt" but they still know exactly what that 4" stripe means. Perhaps theyre just smarter than your co-workers.

Thanks for sharing the knowledge and experience. UER has become a fake resource lately, everyone is an expert.
