Look up your area with the word "sanborn". They've made fire insurance maps for the past 130 years or so, so they are a fantastic resource.

so in addition to google maps; maps.bing.com bing maps has birds eye view. it seriously is crazy helpful, don't replace google maps with it, use them both and you will be as prepared as you can for your explore without physically scouting the location. another resource similar to the sanborn maps; a company called delorme probably publishes really detailed atlas maps for your state/province/county. those maps have all the major roads but they also have dirt bike paths, walking paths, dirt roads, anything you could use as a transportation avenue. so if you want to take it to the next level i bet you could use the atlas in coordination with your online maps and scouting and find at least a few places around you that you otherwise wouldn't. not to mention the atlas is just a good resource to generally have, even just as backup for when the phone isn't working ;)

this other thread also has a cool map tool: http://www.uer.ca/...=1&threadid=123493 using those maps in coordination with driving around and just keeping an eye peeled is your best bet. or if you're ever in town/in the city always be looking for spots. whenever I'm a passenger in a vehicle (rarely), I have my face plastered to the window at all times lol if you have a smartphone, it can be helpful to use google maps and just drop pins every place you find you would want to revisit or investigate when you got home.
word of mouth, in person or on social media is another great way. some posts on here will give you enough tidbits and hints where a few easy google searches will show you where the location they shot was, and then the ball's in your court as far as determining if you want to go there, what your POE would be, etc. instagram and flickr can be really helpful too. use their search bars

If you plan on doing any sort of recon in Mass, use OLIVER. It's kinda like those Sanborn maps others have mentioned, but on crack and free to access. https://maps.massg.../map_ol/oliver.php
