Inside the Old Beast

No pictures can express how big and beautiful this place is, nothing...

We certainly didn't expect to go this far this time due to how our last attempt went. But with a good night of scouting and carefully planned movements we managed to get in and out with no problems.

Fleeting has his own collection down in the comments, make sure to check his shots too!

Rusty Canadian is absolutely right: This is not a place any amount of capturing will do any justice for. You must experience it for yourself.

I never thought I would ever have the opportunity to do just that. Security is no laughing matter, even if it sometimes looks like they're dozing in their booth, further compounded by the safety hazards we know of inside. Thanks to the man above and his careful planning and determination, we got in, and we got out, unscathed.

I took many shots, but these were my favourites:

We arrived at dawn;

Companions;

As we ventured, the sun was high;

(I can't decide if I like that take or this one better.)

But not before we made it to the roof for the ultimate prize;

Sitting under half the moon;

Fear of Heights;

When the fear is overcome;

Peeling flesh and broken glass;

The crane;

Dials and Gages;

The Finale;

I still can't believe we did it. It feels like a dream!
I hope you all enjoyed our pictures.

Great photos, both of you.

It's been years since I've been here - I should probably stop being lazy and do a return visit in the near future.

Fuck my dudes, these photos are awesome. Rusty, the opening shot is insanely well composed, and the 5th does the best job I've ever seen of capturing the size of Hearn.

Fleeting, shots are very atmospheric, reminds me of Jono. Number 7 especially, beautiful. (Also thought of the Darma Initiative when I saw symbol on door!)

Amazing.

Wow... just wow. Nice work guys.

I miss this place. Haven't been inside in about ten years, and didn't own a decent camera at the time, either.

Thanks for the comments, everyone! It makes me proud to see that we've evoked some nostalgia in the older guard here. More than a decade after the earliest DB pics were taken, this place is still the same grand old behemoth.

There are some great pics of the control room on this location's UE DB page. I highlighy suggest you check them out. It's amazing to see how much that one room has changed over the years.

My favourite shot of Rusty's has to be #2. It caught my eye when he snapped it, and still stands out to me.

This is the first explore where we've had really great photos to compare. We're not competing or aiming to outdo each other, but it's interesting to compare the strengths and weaknesses of our cameras, but also how we capture images.

Heyy thanks for the love, guys! 1950s control rooms are definitely considered as master pieces these days.

Here's another one that didn't make it to the list...

That picture is great. It's funny to me because I tried to do a take at the same angle, but it didn't work out too well for me:

Damnit, I was going to say the same thing about a picture I have of you that didn't make it to my cut. I guess this thread is now "Pictures of Rusty Canadian Inside the Old Beast."

Some beautiful shots from both of you guys. Like someone said that fifth shot really puts it in perspective. Mind you I've never been inside.

Looking to tackle it in the next few weeks, anything I should know?

As implied above, we went at dawn; early, early in the morning. I wouldn't call that absolutely mandatory, but I'd say it helped a lot with the getting inside part and not being seen from the security booth. Scope out the place first to determine how you feel most comfortable "going over" and getting inside. Tip: Google Earth satellite imagery is your best friend.
