Rayne's Funeral Home

I've spent the last few weeks on holiday in America as is tradition, so I've now got a bunch of stuff to show for it

I had always wanted to explore a funeral home, they don't come up too often as you can imagine. This one has been kicking around the scene for a while so it felt great to finally see one. The site is made up of three buildings - the funeral home itself and a pair of large garage structures one of which was used to park the hearses in and the other two storey one was used for coffin storage.

The town this is located in had two funeral homes, both owned by the same company and both closed - sadly the second one, although utterly stunning in a really stereotypical 'haunted house' kind of way (it literally couldn't look any more like a depiction of a funeral home you see in movies) is completely stripped back to bare walls and floors, and with large areas of roof tiles missing it was an empty deathtrap not worth plunging to your death in.

However the second one, although bashed and trashed is a belter. It closed in the early 1990s and has been left ever since and the decay has really taken hold, with two sides of the building suffering from some severe subsidence. The floor of the embalming room is very tender and the floor in the adjacent room which contains the body fridge is almost non-existent, with us having to traverse the wobbly plank of death laid across the collapse. The family who owned the business were obviously meticulous hoarders as upstairs where the living quarters were is stuffed full of all manner of funeral related paperwork and junk and very difficult to shoot! Thankfully there are only a few shitty kids graffiti tags evident which is surprising considering how long it's been closed.

I'm sure a few of the members on here will recognise this particular place!

Absolutely epic set, especially the coffin in the front yard and the shelves full of caskets. Any idea what the carpet samples in #11 would have been used for in the context of a funeral home?

HOLY SHIT! Amazing post. The first shot with the coffin in the front got my attention and they just kept getting better from there. A funeral home is on my bucket list. I also really like the second shot with the hearse and "all my friends are dead" in the background. Nice job capturing the feels of this place!

Chalk me up for a 3rd hoorah with the rusting casket laying in front of the house. Although these are all excellent shots, the drama in that one makes it the quintessential image of the set. And then to end with that tongue-in-cheek closing shot.... that had me pissing in my pants. Who would have thought there was such a thing? I wonder if that would work better than Gold Bond for my work shoes?

Cheers all, it's a weird place for sure considering it's been empty for so long now.

The first photo was the only external shot I managed to get, taken from the shelter of the doorway into the hearse garage as by the end of the explore it had gone from cloudy into an absolutely ferocious rainstorm, it's a shame it doesn't quite come across in the photo just how heavy the rain was at that point!

Awesome photos! That first shot is a great angle. It is nice to see that the vandalism seems slow there, and things stay mostly the same.

Still working on it...

Very nice!! This was a good one for sure! I think you can confidently say you traveled from further to shot this place than any other explorer. Can't wait to see your shots from the rest of the trip.

I wonder what mortuary spray smells like?

Man, it has changed so much in even just a year. Still one of the best spots in the Southeast though.
