Bittersweet & inevitable. An introduction to exploration for many Californians. I’ll have to make a final trip.

I went yesterday and the signs say the official date they are starting demolition is 10-30-18. All I noticed in the short time is that more boards have been added to entrances & windows. There are also new fences added around certain areas.

Seems nuts to board everything up when it's going to be bulldozed soon. Everything by REI got re-boarded a couple of months ago.

Not uncommon to see the news report on plans to demolish an "eye sore" or "nuisance" property, only for it to be still there 10+ years later.

Give abandonment a reason for its sacrificial reclamation to nature. Love it. Remember it. Take a picture. Share it. Leave the decay to nature.

Probably the demo contractor as they are in complete control of the property until the demo is completed.
Liability purposes. Trespassing may have just gotten a lot more risky too.

Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.

Went by a few weeks ago and one of the buildings closest to the VA building was clearly being lived in.

A "brig" is aboard a Navy or Coast Guard vessel. Terrestrial military installations call them "stockade". The Ford Ord stockade is not part of the FORA (Fort Ord Reuse Authority) and is owned by a private cement company which used the stockade grounds for their mixing operations. So it's not likely to be torn down soon, unless the cement company loses their raw materials contract and has to start demolishing the concrete from the stockade and pulverizing it for reuse. There's a veritable fortune in scrap metal in the stockade, I'm sure.

Could be a contractual requirement as part of reducing any insurance costs. Though I suppose they still gotta search inside immediately before demo anyway, can you imagine the bad PR & lawsuit if some drunken bum 'stumbled' her way inside & got killed during the bulldozing of the site?! Another aspect of boarding/reboarding-it could have simply been busy-work for someone, as a result of "Give us the contract, and we'll hire 20 local, 'disadvantaged' workers!"

Way back when I was about 10 years old, thanks to an Uncle who owned a small construction company, I 'worked' at Wurtsmith AFB in Michigan, standing in a shallow pit on the airfield 'ramp' area painting 1" rebar sticking out of recently poured concrete bright red. I was quite proud of my first contribution to US national security -- USAF Strategic Air Command to-wit -- for all of about 10 minutes, until that shallow pit & the rebar was filled-in with concrete.

Was just out at Ord last Sunday. CSUMB is building a LOT of buildings. The stockade is still there (concrete company still there). A lot of the barracks buildings near Imjin and REI are still there. The pool building is still there (as is the chapel adjacent to it). Didn't get to make it out to the east garrison to see what's new or still there.

You sure about that? Pics? When I look at Gmaps or Earth Pro, I still see the eastern part of the East Garrison relatively untouched since I was there last in Nov, 2009.

I checked it out about six months ago. Much of the East Garrison is gone and has been for some time, including the lovely theater building. Its luxury housing now. They may keep some of the older stucco structures on Fremont St.

Most of the West side is going fast as well. Upper barracks off Gigling Rd. are now fenced for demo as well as the gym on Colonel Durham St. These structures were not fenced when I was there three weeks ago.

I saw no other visible status change on any of the other locations of the West side.

I was down there a few weeks ago! I'm not sure how much it has changed, since it was my first time actually checking the place out, but the place is amazing! It had such a weird vibe to it, especially as the fog was rolling in.

A guy actually saw me exploring as he was driving by and he drove all the way back to see what was up. I though he was a local that was going to tell me to leave, but he actually pointed me towards this site!

Anyways, I'll have to make another trip back down there soon!
