Downsizing to upload?

What's the best way to make picture files small enough to upload here while keeping as much quality as possible?

Great question! Everything I post something here, my pictures get all grainy n' stuff...

I use TinyPic for a lot of my posts since it resizes images automatically and provides the URL link to the resized picture. The huge downside is all of the pop-up advertising that you have to put up with.

After like 2 hours of trying to figure this system (not a bad one just hard to work) out, I just went with the flickr option. Its super easy!

The problem with the gallery creator here is that you can't upload pictures over 10MB... For people doing high res images it means they have to resize prior to uploading...

I want something where I don't have to upload to a 3rd party host. Everytime I use the gallery creator, it makes my images noisy... I mean really noisy. Where as I see others posting images using the creator and their pictures stay crisp. I know it's uploaded from here by opening the image in another window, or looking the codes by using the "Quote" reply system. The link Rob have doesn't say how to avoid that... How?

I’m pretty sure all photos that are uploaded directly to UER are subject to the 100kb limit.

I've seen some posts where people have uploaded super high rez photos that were even pretty big. But I can't upload much more than 320x240. Like this photo, Id like to be able to upload at least a little bigger than this.

Others could be hosting their photos off-site.

You really have to use a third party website to host your images, then post links on the forums, at least if you want them to be high quality. This thread by Intrinsic is really good and explains all the details for several websites.

I usually go through my Flickr page (3rd party), but there are times for whatever reason I need to conform to the limit and post my photo directly. I must say, figuring out a way to resize my 20mb photo down to a 100kb copy from an iPhone has been a painfully frustrating journey.

I thought I had shared a few of these a while back, but I’m sitting here randomly browsing UER and I don’t see anything, so I’ll share it with you guys now (caveat: I just pulled these from my browser bookmarks so I don’t remember which ones are best). It’s still a pain in the ass of course to resize the photos, but it’s at least a simple pain in the ass if you can find someone else who did all the coding and is willing to share the reward of all that effort. A big advantage of using one of these or something similar, is that most sites will “sharpen,” your photo as well as find a way to make your photo a decent size on the screen without looking like utter crap at the end of the process. As I said, some sites do this better than others.

(Free!) Image Resizing Websites (there are apps that do this too if you dig a little bit). Many of these will do other stuff too if you want them to.

https://www.imgonl...g/resize-image.php

http://webresizer.com/resizer/

https://resizeimage.net

Never tried this last one, but it looks interesting at first glance (and it looks user friendly):

https://www.xnview.com/en/

The learning curve varies mostly by experience, but also by the website itself, as does each site’s picture quality, features, and customization abilities. Try out more than one because I’ve noticed some of these are better at creating a decent end result and some aren’t so great. I suck at this stuff, so I prefer simple myself.

Lastly, if someone finds one of these that works decently with batches or maybe some kind of preset option, please share it with the rest of us! I’m still looking for something like that, but it’s probably just another pipe dream.

If you don't want to have to install a program on your computer, there are websites that are quick and easy to use. This one lets you easily adjust the compression and preview.

FastStone is awesome for Windows. My iMac is older and no longer runs Crossover correctly so I can't use FastStone on it but it works like a charm on all of my Windows computers. When using my iMac or MacBook I usually resize using either Photoshop as you have control or I use some basic web browser-based resizer

I am updating my list of resizing sites due to a couple of them going offline. As of April 2022, these should still work and are all (hopefully) still free to use:

Use flickr. You'll automatically get several sizes of the photos and they don't prevent using UBB code to embed links to flickr.

I’m updating my previous post. The #2 website is getting an error message (two comments above this one).
