Very small part. Plan on trying to do a original route before I die.

There are a ton of abandoned things and various roadside oddities to find along the California and Arizona stretches.

Yep! I was driving through the area a few weeks ago on my way to the Grand Canyon for spring break. I didn't have time to stop, but I saw plenty of abandoned motels and shops along the side of the road in the desert. There was one that had a big concrete dome out front somewhere between Winslow and Flagstaff in Arizona.
"Sorry, I didn't know I'm not supposed to be here," he said, knowing full well he wasn't supposed to be there. |

It's on my bucket list now

I did the California portion around Christmas. Plenty to see! Abandoned and not alike.

When I lived in Flagstaff AZ I had a job that was right on 66. Through the years I've driven or ridden across many of the remaining pieces in AZ and CA. Would love to see more to the east. Abby Normal

I did a portion, took a ton of photos. Memory card was mistakingly formatted.

I did most of the Route on my way to Arizona. It was a great trip but at times, I couldnt stay on the original road because there are sections that arent clearly marked.

Looks like I might need to pick up a dual-sport then!
Are we living a life that is safe from harm? Of course not, we never are. But that's not the right question. The question is, are we living a life that is worth the harm? |

I've been watching YT videos on it and it looks pretty cool. I'm really wanting to check this out for myself now...it would be awesome.

Most of what remains in Oklahoma, but often not deliberately, and not in the last 20 years.

I did TX NM AZ and CA legs, twice. In some places its a separate highway/road in some places its become just a service road or absorbed by the Interstate. Best way to see it is by motorcycle.

Right at the TX/NM border, just off of the highway are a few cool buildings on 66 which turns to dirt. When I did that section, I was flying down the road pulling a U-Haul. Fun times indeed.

Been on it a couple of times back in Missouri. Mostly around the Joplin area. I don't remember if there was anything cool to explore, but I remember you could go and see the Spook Light. Not that I have ever actually seen it, but you could.

I've been down most of the Illinois section of it. Some pretty cool places along the way, however, the most interesting structures are all locked up pretty tight. The Joliet Prison is still treated as if it still has inmates.
I'm here for a good time not a long time. |

I'm planning on doing a motorcycle trip across North America this year and I'm totally going to be on the lookout for cool places like these on the way.

I actually just posted on this in the Pacific Southwest thread. UECAL and I did part of the Mojave Desert stretch, and it really made me want to do the whole thing. It feels great just driving on an empty road through the desert, and there's a ton of cool stuff, both abandoned and otherwise, littering the route. We saw the Amboy lions (two life-sized marble oriental lions a few hundred feet off the road), the shoe tree, and a few ghost towns, and we were only on it for ~40 mi.
