Freight Hopping?

After watching countless Hobo Stobe (rip) videos and Brave Dave's adventure, and just a general fascination of trains, I've got an itch. I linked up with a guy who will take me from Toronto to Montreal for my first hop, and I'm stoked for the weather to get nicer.

I'm wondering if anyone here has freight hopped around Ontario/Canada? Any stories, experiences, tips?

I've known a lot of montreal punks who were into it. Never did myself, but it looks like a lot of fun. Try not to get run over.

I've did it out East (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia) a few summers ago. Fun experience but dangerous as all hell, much like the whole urban exploration thing. Hopping out of Toronto can be kinda a pain, I usually just hitchhiked to Montreal in the past cause of it but I wouldn't say it's impossible either.

Just keep your head on a swivel and watch out for the bull. Getting caught doing this shit will go down way worse for you than getting caught in an abandoned building. I wouldn't suggest getting on or off a train at anything more than a stand still at least not until you've done it a few times and have a feel for it. Intermodal/container trains are usually the best ride if you want a straight shot to somewhere. Anything else is considered local/junk and will usually dump you in the middle of nowhere when the train is cut off and left in a small yard.

If you end up hopping East of Quebec, I'd be happy to give you some more specific advice.

I did a little bit of freight hopping in BC before and thought it was fucking awesome. I loved the noise the train makes. I'm big into noise music though.

At a noise record shop in Tokyo they were selling recordings of train sounds. The old noise guy there said he used to hang around train yards as a kid just to listen to the noises and that how he got into noise music originally.

I never knew there was a name for enjoying the sounds of everyday noise. I can't say I've heard too many freighters, but I love the sounds of the old Hawker subways on the TTC, and I've been meaning for a while now to compile sound bites into files that emulate what I remember hearing when they operated.

Right? Like, on one hand, I'm thinking Art of Noise or some pioneering electronica-level stuff, but on the other, I totally dig it.
