The Death of Sears

So in my area there's multiple sears all in different stages of their death.

The photos attached are of perhaps the most interesting one currently. This one is in a mall where the sears is actually 3 floors. However the 3rd floor isn't accessible from the mall and only from the Sears. So Sears can't sublet it out as they're doing with the two other locations until their death. So for now there's just an entire 3rd floor that's empty.

Another sears near me has the 2nd level of it turned into a Primark and is in the final closing phase now. It seems what they did was claim they were closing for renovations on the second floor but really sublet it until their lease was set to expire it looks like. As now the Sears has announced it's closing in April entirely after having the Primark upstairs in its second floor for a year. So it will be interesting to see who moves in. I'm most interested in if they left the escalators in here and just enclosed them that now go up to the Primark.

The third Sears location has its second floor closed for renovations it claims but I wouldn't be surprised if they were just moving out and waiting for someone to sublet the 2nd floor space.

This shithead single handedly destroyed Sears and got even richer in doing so.

Sears and KMart both.

Reduced staffing makes for ample opportunity to slip behind the scenes.

Ah yet another prime example of executives that don't give a damn about anyone but themselves. It makes sense then what he's doing with the real estate because two of these mall locations are doing great so it makes sense to kill sears and lease to another

Sounds just like my hometown. Our Sears closed last year, it's 3rd floor is only accessible from within the store. Today it sits empty, that probably won't change.

Your photos reminds me of the Sears I used to work at. Ours was a two story but they closed the first floor and used it as storage, only offering appliances, electronics, tools and shoes. I'm also 90% sure that the auto center there has been closed for the past year, which is bittersweet.

There's a Sears near me like that. They just built a wall in front of the escalators and called it good. The entire second floor, which once included a full-service restaurant is just used for storage. The restaurant kitchen is mostly intact.

Sears' woes go back long before their shady CEO... Sears had been in trouble for awhile, in part to the rise of walmart... On top of that, their stores were a mess, employees poorly trained, underpaid and they were, just like every other brick and mortar store, starting to suffer from the effects of online shopping. As an aside, Kmart is owned by Sears so they're suffering the same fate.
Look at other retailers like sears... it's amazing they held on for as long as they did.

I've read a couple of analysis on the fall of Sears, and while their chain of crappy CEO's haven't helped, their demise almost seemed inevitable.

Not too far behind Sears sliding into the abyss is JCPenney.

Monkey Ward has been dead since 2001. The current incarnation of Monkey Ward is a totally separate company that bought the rights to the name.

Kmart actually owns Sears or more so they were the dominate overtaker.

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Kmart is buying Sears, Roebuck & Co. for $11 billion in a deal that will marry two of the nation's oldest retailers that had trouble keeping up with the changes in American culture around them.

The Sears nearest to me is a depressing place and I feel sorry for the employees, especially those in the optical center, which is pretty much hidden in the middle of the store. I wouldn't be surprised if I were to take a nap for a couple of hours in one of the side rooms and not be noticed.

The hilarious thing is they had these shirts at the sears by me thats undergoing liquidation. The price was $52 for a TShirt and $20 on clearance. The sales associate even laughed and was like no way would I buy that. $52 for a freaking T-Shirt and it wasn't an error the whole rack of basic tshirts was that price. They had a cookie monster one too.

Also of interest is the fact that they're literally selling baggies of sand and used library books that were left behind by someone.

Also of note is that this mall has undergone multiple renovations and expansions which I thought was interesting all the Neon is still in the mall they just painted over it.

But the best part of the trip was the giant peanut driving around. 1.

I didn't know anyone cared about Sears. An empty Sears is the best kind... Pretty boring looking too.
