What hospital was that? Topeka State has been gone for years.

The Menninger Foundation building in Topeka. They are selling off the property in chunks for new medical facilities in that mental health hot bed part of the city. Negotiations are in process (from my understanding) and it is looking like the main building will probably be torn down. They have it fenced, boarded, and 24/7 guarded now so it's a total no-go zone. The city and the Foundation (moved to TX) has said they don't care if it is torn down or not, and that they will tear it down if it makes the property a better sale package.

oh yeah. That campus used to be bigger but they bulldozed most of it. I was in the main building years ago but didn't get to see much, we bolted when we thought security was outside. Turned out it was a false alarm, was just an old man driving around lol.

I really want to get in to there. But I just don't think it's really possible now... Are you from around the area?

Signed. I hate when cities dont repurpose historical buildings and just tear them down. It makes no sense to destroy that much history
|
|
Just signed. I absolutely hate it when cities do stuff like this. I've seen good sites near me go, and it's sad. But this is a whole new level. Why waste almost $9,000,000 to demolish it when you can just leave it standing? And besides, this place is absolutely beautiful, both in its history and its features!

The saddest part about all of this is that the owners of the Weston State Hospital (Now called the Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum) put in a good offer to buy this place and restore is like they did with the Weston property but were told by the City Council that their "plan was not a viable one". Seriously, who the fuck cares if it is "viable" or not just let them give it a good try instead of spending $9million of taxpayer money on demo.
Update on Demo: They have began to tear down the power plant that is attached to the rear of the admin. and yesterday they tore down a gazebo that was in the rear of the building.
Everyone has a dark side, mines just a little more illuminated. |

I immediately signed. Places like these shouldn't be demolished!

Signed. My hometown bulldozed a historic parish center to make way for a parking lot. I'd hate to see Kirkbride suffer the same ignoble fate.
"Sorry, I didn't know I'm not supposed to be here," he said, knowing full well he wasn't supposed to be there. |

Signed. This Kirkbride in particular is in fantastic condition and represents so much to this community. If my signature can make one bit of difference, then sign me up.

Signed the petition. What a beautiful spot

This is such a tragedy! The demolition is progressing despite uproars from many people and organizations. This beautiful building will be destroyed if we don't get more support. Hopefully that current mayor will be voted out.
I'm here for a good time not a long time. |

Hey, I'm a newbie here...but I signed it. Good luck to the cause, its a gorgeous structure! I'm in NC, just found out about a few sanitariums in VA & WV that are unused, but they offer tours and stuff...

UPDATE:
Not entirely sure of the validity of this post. Saw this on reddit. Hello folks, it's me again. I bring good news! I have called Andrew Bremseth, City Administrator of Fergus Falls, and he gave me some very happy news: Fergus Falls Regional Treatment Center is going to be saved! The new information is part of the City's phased demolition project. Phase One, completed this summer, demolished the newer administration building, garage, and filled in the tunnels that ran beneath the buildings. Phase Two, to be completed later this year(ish) will take out three buildings behind the main Kirkbride building and wings, the gym, cafeteria, and laundry building. **There are no plans to take down the main building or the wings.** They will be saved for future renovations, following mixed-use and separate developments. Thank you all for your support, and I'm very glad that this wonderful building could be saved. \-John Michael
