Since I don't have full membership, I can't find ANYTHING on here or other sites about the abandoned sams club in vickery meadow. Has this ever been explored? I have been wanting to go for a year or so and every time I see a something that convices me its a bad idea. any tips or information on this place?

Some places are more risky than others. You have to put in effort to find info on these places, the good places usually come from finding them yourself.

Be careful about posting specific locations too, you'll be less likely to get any help.

ive done months of googling trying to find anything. There are places on here that ive been already before they were torn down, but this one place is puzzling to me. Is it a bad idea to carry a LEGAL weapon with me on explorations that im unfamiliar with history. i will be more careful on how specific i make the posts

Depends on what kind of weapon, a registered firearm could still come off as bad.

its just a 5 or 6 inch knife. Found a little bit of information in the last couple of hours. all i can find is land value and when it was built and closed. Going to do some scouting soon. I can post in the db as a bm right?

It’s a terrible idea to take any weapon with you on an exploration. If you get caught the police will not look kindly on it and view you in a different way. Anything that puts the cops more on edge is not good for you.

Googling only gets you so far. Your next step is to go to the location and scout it out. Don’t plan on entering on your first go (you can always play by ear if an opportunity presents itself), just go in the daytime and do a lap around the building. Maybe snap a few pics of the exterior for future reference. Gather info, make a plan, and then return.

A knife with a 5 inch blade is not legal to carry in Texas.
If you think you need protection you shouldn't be going there to begin with...

Oh fuck, k bars are legal now...

That said it's not a good idea to open carry when trespassing.
It's a great way to get shot...

Possession of a "deadly weapon" bumps it up to a class A misdemeanor. Punishable with up to a year in jail and/or up to a $4,000 fine.

A weapon can be a legal weapon and still be deadly. Remember in Texas now it is legal to carry a Bowie knife, boot knives and pretty much any bladed weapon. But I don't take them with me on explores.

But I will ruin someones day with my tripod or my walking stick if I am forced to.

my concern is the large amount of homeless people in the area, and while its not in the worst neighborhood, its definitely not the best

Then stay away. Squatters have rights too.
You brandish a knife on someone you better know how to use it.
&
Expect to get cut in a knife fight... maybe worse.

side note knife would not be visible other than in a life threatening situation. I hoping if anyone is there i know them as i live in the area and while on walks ill talk to them pretty regularly. Alot of those people were dealt shit hands in life and tend to be decent if your decent to them

Dude, I had the same worries too. Don't be so focused on homeless people, there are a lot of other things you should worry about.

Regardless, you are breaking the law by trespassing. Any kind of weapon you have on you will not help your case if you get caught. This is not always a safe hobby. I have been exploring for about 6 months and I have yet to find a homeless person. But that risk will always be there.

Check out some of the common thread topics on how to deal with certain situations. I have learned a lot from UER but I have also learned from experience. Shit I still feel like I have a lot to learn.

dan, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! Its refreshing to see other people just getting started. my first few months on here i was just digging thru locations and noticing them being mostly over 5 years old and was really concerned this site was as abandoned as some of the places. (thought forum was for full members at first

There is a reason for that. Give it time and you will get there. The forum is kind of small so watch what you say, word travels fast.

Talking to people is a good start In my experience. That said squatters have rights but they're also people who pretty much are in their home and have a basic drive to protect that space. I've found a generically spoken announcement of my intention to just take a few photos of the building and no desire to mess with their space or belongings has worked well. If they seem to not be cool with it I leave because it's their space even if our legitimacy to be there is equal.

Also pepper spray is a lot less likely to be construed as a threat by squatters, security (unless pointed at them) or a property owner. As a often solo female explorer these things have served me well for years!

Good luck and sometimes just walking the building perimeter is the best start!

Don't bother bringing a weapon. Stealth should always be Plan A, with diplomacy and running away being Plans B and C, respectively. Violence should be a very distant Plan Z, so much so that you shouldn't even plan for it when deciding what to bring. Don't even consider it an option. If things deteriorate that far, there's plenty of makeshift weapons lying around that won't give you a Class A Misdemeanor if caught with them by the cops while exploring.

Stealth has always worked for me, but I've heard plenty of explorers say that it's amazing how far a pack of cigarettes and a McMuffin will get you with the average squatter. Treat them like fellow human beings instead of rabid animals, and things are far more likely to go your way.

"Sorry, I didn't know I'm not supposed to be here," he said, knowing full well he wasn't supposed to be there.

Moved to the South Board since youre asking about a location there.

If you need to continue a Bowie knife discussion in the Rookie Board feel free to start a new thread on the Texas Penal Code there.

96 Sam clubs were closed today, there wont be anything left inside not even peeling paint.
