Hello everyone.
It's been awhile since i've last explored and i've got the urge to go out and explore some more. Unfortunately here in Ohio it's getting colder. Does anyone have any tips for winter exploring or a comparison between exploring in hot weather vs exploring in the cold? Im always worried about homeless people and I have a feeling I would see more of them in the winter.

Do you worry about homeless people because youre afraid they will go hungry? Or do you worry about homeless people because you think will get you? If youre afraid of homeless people and cant deal with the cold why not go explore something inside. The off limits area or employee only area of an active building, skyscraper, hotel, factory.. Use your imagination urban exploring is a pretty broad concept.

If you are seeing homeless people exposed to the winter temperatures, you live in a warm place. I prefer exploring in winter. As long as you wear enough layers, you don't have to worry about the weather, and there will be fewer people around to see you.

Bad part of winter shooting is the gear's cold and it's impossible to shoot with gloves. Li batteries lose capacity from the cold. If you stay out of people's -homes-, the homeless are rarely an issue.

I guess it depends what you mean by cold too? Up here in the great white north, we're already covered in snow and my last couple explores were pretty nipply. I think the same rules apply...proper clothing, good footwear and layer up. Gear can freeze and gloves with the fingers cut out are great until you think your fingertips are gonna fall off. lol In some ways the snow is great because you can see if there's tracks heading into a location....also not great for the same reason if you're the one making the tracks. It can change access too. I've been thigh high in the ditch trekking into a place (one of those step and sink scenarios) and cold can mean ice and different types of slipping hazards. Anyway..a few thoughts from me. Only because I've been out recently in the butt freezing cold!

I much prefer the winter over summer. Less vegetation to fight through and worse weather meaning less people outside in general. Down side is much fewer hours of daylight.

There is a location I have been scouting over the last few weeks. You can't access through the front due to a neighborhood and a nosy old man who loves to call the cops. The backside is super overgrown woods... at least it was until abut a week ago. Now that we are getting hard freezes access through there is going to be cake. We are giving it another couple weeks to really die off due to the cold and then we are going to go. There is another location we have visited that during the summer is entirely blocked off from view by the trees, but during winter is wide open so we avoid it unless the trees are leafy. There are pros and cons to both. Exploring is a year round hobby.

I definitely prefer the wintertime to explore but I live in Texas so I don’t think it counts as winter anyways. My biggest gripe is my nose runs when it’s cold. And my toes get cold if I don’t wear my Uggs. Oh, and it’s not as photogenic (usually).
I wandered till the stars went dim. |

Lol, there's no winter in TX... The running nose thing is actually an allergy to cold. It's normal. Happens to me when temps dip below 60-70 degrees sometimes. Good thing you're in Texas

It's weirdly warm where I am and I think was about 0 c today which I think it around 32 f? I spent the afternoon out exploring feeling like I was in the tropics! lol I did have to run in the knee high snow though...feeling a little sore tonight

It's a brisk 57F here, going down to 47 degrees. Suffering the ravages of winter. Snow? Only on the worst of days. Once it goes to slush and ice it's no fun anyway... and best of all, no salt on the roads!

Sounds wonderful! As much as I try to convince myself every year that I "like" winter, there are days when I wonder why I still live here....I'm going this morning to invest in some micro spikes for my boots. The ice and I will be friends this year!

The only thing I miss is newly fallen snow and that great smell. Careful with the spikes; a planted foot leaves your knee more vulnerable to serious injury. Never pivot with your foot planted. Always pivot on your toes not heels. Meh I hate ice... small steps.

I don't know why I'm always so worried about that when there are actual threats I should be worried about. The cold isn't a problem for me though, so that's good.

I've usually avoided anything that could seem like someone is shacked up in there. At least I think. I just remember the smell from one room that someone was definitely living in. My partner told me that's exactly what homeless people smelled like. Something like bananas and piss?

Exploring in the winter can have its advantages. For example, exploring a few days after snowfall will reveal any recent activity. No matter how out of the way their shelter, homeless people probably need to leave to find food (unless they somehow stocked up, which is unlikely). Likewise, security guard patrol routes can be easily tracked, and the presence of any animal larger than a squirrel will be clearly visible via tracks. Of course, this also means that your tracks will be visible too, and if you don't take the time to cover them, your tracks will serve as a step by step guide on how to access the PoE for anyone else who happens by later, so it can be a double edged sword.

Whatever you do, bundle up. Was on top of a mill last week and just about froze my nuts off from the freezing wind.

i think exploring in winter time is better in some ways, like not many people will be out and snitch on you because i don't think many people would be out when it's pretty cold outside, unlike in the summer more people would be out when it is warmer. don't worry too much about the homeless people either, most of them are pretty nice and won't try to be intimidating unless they have a need to. also wear a bunch of clothes and an extra layer of socks with preferably leather waterproof hiking boots like timberlands so you can try to prevent frostbite or hypothermia.

If I'm not photographing with a dslr, winter. If I am, summer.

I actually like winter better. Fewer people out and about, the ones that are aren't concerned with much beyond going home and with much of my state a desert the cold months are much preferred for long walks to get to places 😀
