When I was in college, I applied for a summer internship at the US Bureau of Mines office in Minneapolis (I was a Geology student).

They were already in the process of shutting down, but I got a tour and got to hang out for a while. A bunch of years later, it was one of the blown-out local derps, but it was neat to be back.

Since then it's been demolished. RIP BOM

Some time after that, a friend bought the MS-40 Nike Base a little ways out of town. I'd never been there before, but it was clearly a place that had been explored a good deal. I helped clean and repair a lot of the base. (And because the city council are a bunch of obstructionist assholes, it's been abandoned again.) It might be long enough, now, that it would be interesting to go look around again...

One of the first places I ever explored as a kid was an old car dealership my friend used to work at.

Also, more recently when my family lived on Long island NY, we had to move out of military housing. The military had donated several of the houses to a nearby college, (ours was one that was donated) and some they sold to a private developer. Those eventually got destroyed and super expensive luxury condos built in their place. But before they demo'd them I went and explored inside of one that my friend used to live in.

Certainly did. My first exploration was a bowling alley that closed about ten years ago due to a severe winter storm, after I had visited there only a few weeks beforehand. About three years later I got to explore it as it was being demolished.

I've had the opposite happen - I explored an abandoned marina type building and then a couple of years later went back to find it had turned into a (very delicious) pub!

It's gone kinda flat in the past year or so- service has been sketchy at best and the food lacks inspiration. Or maybe I've been unlucky three times in a row now, but it was bad enough that last time I walked out and went to some generic chain restaurant because I was starving. (Shoeless Joe's or Crabby Joe's or some similar dump). Disappointing because it was a really awesome spot before.

I remember going to Rockingham Park in Salem, NH often as a kid. It's a shame the whole area has been demolished. It breaks my heart not seeing the big old iron gate that says Rockingham Park. I used to love seeing it silhouetted by the setting sun.

For me it's been both a positive and negative experience to be in places that I've been in when open. I got to go into my old middle school 14 years after I had finished 8th grade; it was a building built in the 40s and was being demolished for a new gym...that was pretty cool to see as an adult and get all the nostalgic feelings seeing everything again (plus, I hated it there as a kid so it felt like good revenge to see it being torn down..it was a death trap even when it was still being used!)

On the other hand, I went down to NOLA about 2 months after Katrina with my family, and found my granddad's old house. He had moved out about 10 years prior, but the people who had lived there after him didn't get a chance to ever go back to the house to get their stuff. I don't know if they died or just left; all the furniture, food, clothes....everything you could see showed evidence of having floated up pretty high and then slowly settled back down to the floor once the water receded. The house had 6 feet of water during Katrina, and when we saw it, it just had 1 foot of caked mud on the ground. The kids room (where I used to stay as a kid too) still had their drawings, stuffed animals and school books out.

It hurt pretty bad to see that place, I think about it often and wish I knew what happened to the family that lived there. The house has since been demolished.

Long story short (my bad)...I always find it fascinating how we can all get strong emotions (good or bad) from our built environment

Not after it fully closed down, but explored much of the closed off areas at KD Station https://www.uer.ca...ow.asp?locid=22906 back in 2001-2001 when the bowling alley, costume shop, record store & Mexican restaurant were still there.
A friend worked at the bowling alley and had keys to open the elevator at closed off floors because they stored their kegs there.

I've been to more places that were closed and are now remodeled than ones that were open and are now decaying.

Growing up as a kid, Randall Park Mall was my favorite place to be. Eventually closed down, then years later me and some friends decided why not try getting in, and it was amazing to see and so much nostalgia. To this day its been my favorite explore. It was heartbreaking when they tore it down

There was this house I used to pass on the way to school that had these huge guys that were always watching TV (I could see them through te window). Now, the place is foreclosed and is pretty scary to explore at night. Definitely feels weird going inside.

In 2008, I poked around the hospital where I had worked in the psych ward 15 years earlier. It was demolished a few months later.

Here is where I used to park.

I don't remember this being here when I worked there though.

There's an abandoned hospital at the mountain in my town. I was already pretty familiar with this hospital. There's also another abandoned child hospital in the downtown. Since they just build the largest hospital (The CHUM) in North America, there's like 3 more hospitals left in abandon. So yeah, there's a lot of hospitals to explore here!

I last shopped at this outlet mall about a year before it closed for good, and my family used to go Christmas shopping there. It's due to be demolished this year, so I made sure to get a look at it in its abandoned state.

This mill was built and operated by my father in the 80's. We lived in the house next to it until we moved away when I was 3 years old. So I don't actually remember it, but it is still very much part of my personal history. I didn't even know it was abandoned. We just went there so I can show my girlfriend the town that is very important to my family and myself.

I haven't explored any buildings I've previously visited, however I can shed some light on the chemicals. As far as I know, the chemicals are used to treat water in the hydronic system. To prevent pipe corrosion, as well as corrosion in the boiler. They are also used to test water purity. Keep in mind that the water in the hydronic system is generally not potable, or not used to drink. So the chemicals wouldn't be hurting anybody.

Awesome explore though!

Nope, came close though...I visited a telecommunications installer buisness less than a month after they vacated the building, so when I got inside the power was still on and everything. TV's played. Minifridges still ran, motion sensing lights turned on. A month later the power had been shut off and the building was TRASHED in the span of a week. I would post some pics, but Imageshack went paid only and took my images with it, then Photobucket followed suit, and my originals are locked up on a hard drive I can't access because I don't have a functioning computer anymore. But it was Advanced Communication Systems in Waterbury CT.
(Edit: I made a fib...)

I got to explore the kindergarten (and former elementary school) that I attended, just a little over ten years after it had been closed and locked up. Fantastic experience.

As a child we always went trick-or-treating in Blue Ridge Mall, as well as took many trips there for school clothes. One part of the mall was closed down and walled off, and we decided to corrupt a security guard and make him our friend . From that point on we had basically complete access to the entire mall to do as we wished . From driving cars inside the mall, to running through all of the back hallway is, to celebrating Fourth of July on the roof. It was all good fun until the last brick hit the ground ...

Yes! Recently, actually! My mom was schizophrenic, and often off of her meds. She was often locked up in the local psychiatric hospital because of this. I remember going into the huge building and visiting her there. The smells of the hospital, and the blank stares of the patients shuffling through the hallways. When my mom died in 2013, I became obsessed with getting in to the building. But I read many horror stories about the security and people getting in trouble. Every time I dared try to venture in there something happened and it didn’t work out, until 2 weeks ago. I saw a couple of other urban explorers creeping around the building so I decided to go try it myself. I creeped into the back lot and noticed that there was a hole to get in! So in I went! It was incredible. I wasn’t able to explore the whole building. But I will be going back whenever I can! It was an incredible experience!

I got to explore three schools I attended before they were torn down. Elementary, middle then my high school. Odd that they’re all gone now.
