I've been thinking about doing this for a long time now. Do you guys think this is a good idea? Germany is where I am thinking of going btw!

Steps for exploring in unfamiliar or foreign countries.
Step 1. Search for locations via search engines/Google Earth.
Step 2. Search for people who live in Germany via UER,Flickr,IG,etc.
Step 3. Contact said people asking to meet up or status of locations you have found.
Step 4. Have fun in Germany.

Not sure about your country of origin, but urban exploration has participants all over the world. From the Catophiles of the Paris Catacombs to the bunker delvers of Russia, to our very own non-American explorers here on UER, there's explorers all over the world.
If you're in Western Germany, I'd recommend looking for old WWII bunkers along the German/France border, around where the Maginot Line stood. Seeing as it was once the most fortified border in the world (Prior to the Korean DMZ) there's got to be a few left standing. Just watch out for undetonated ordinance.
If you're in Eastern Germany, there's probably many abandoned Soviet fortifications and nuclear launch facilities. You could look for abandoned industrial buildings too, but you're not likely to find anything predating 1950, since anything older would have been bombed to cinders.

Funny story, I met an Austrian urban explorer last year, and he was like "Wow, North Americans urban explore too? I've never met one before!" So yeah, it's in most Western countries, and many Asian countries as well. We just don't always have the right people in our networks.

Just be careful in Germany as in some parts of it the police take a very very dim view of exploring and can cause you real hassle. Trespass is also a criminal offence there much like the USA.
Belgium is a fantastic country to explore in as it's so small but packed full of stuff.
Or you could come to the UK where trespassing isn't a criminal offence, and in Scotland there are no laws against trespass at all.

I would highly recommend contacting locals, they'll know the language, laws, locations, dangers, etc. That's a good idea even in your own country! There's an international forum on here where you could ask for contact info, or you could try seeking out websites and forums in the area you plan to go.
Be aware that there may be certain local attitudes and customs that color how you should ask about exploring. For example, in both Minnesota and France, asking for a tour of the best stuff will get you laughed at and/or directed to joke locations. Being respectful and open-minded to what locals are willing to show you is good. Even if they want to take you somewhere you find boring, they could be sizing you up to see if you're cool enough to see the good stuff.
Turn off the internet and go play outside.

I can only speak for the part of Germany I went to but there are many explorers there. I connected with a couple before I left but found a few more while I was there. There's another member here who has explored extensively in Germany. Shoot me a pm if you like.

Just recently explored in Germany (someday I'll get photos online). I can only speak to the east but there was plenty to explore and I had no trouble

A German friend I was talking to recently was telling me how he was at a rave in an abandoned hospital a few years ago and he decided to start walking around. Dude wound up walking to a part of the hospital German SWAT(equivalence) were doing training runs in and after seeing him let him sit and watch, only to yell at him when he tried to pet the dogs, but without caring about his being there.

Been to .DE a couple of times now, explored both times. Will probably go back. I don't worry about picking off the low-hanging fruit off the location tree, since its all new to me.

For Russia, I'll say that for the most part, no one cares about explorers. Russians are voracious scavengers and anything of value has been gone for years.
That being said, it's really best to travel with a local person that knows the landscape and how to stay safe.
You don't want to have a run-in with police. You really don't want to have a run-in with locals. Getting beaten to the point that you need medical attention is a possibility and going to the hospital can be a death-defying feat in and of itself. There are modern hospitals in Russia, but at many hospitals there's no guarantee that they have trained staff, clean instruments or even a doctor.

So it was just decided that I'm going to Italy this summer! Obviously, I'm going to go urbexing... the places that The Proper People and Broken Window Theory visited were amazing and inspiring so I can't pass it up.
I'm just worried about police in a foreign country. Has anyone ever encountered police while urbexing in a foreign country? If so, what happened? Any tips for me? Thanks.
(p.s. I'm 18 of age and I have a valid US drivers license and passport. I barely speak Italian, but I'm trying to learn before I go.)

Years ago, we got a little lost in Italy. One of my companions spoke Romanian, which is similar to Italian. He asked for directions in Italian from a kid on the street and that kid spoke perfect English.
You probably want to learn a little about the culture in addition to the language. What's OK in one country may be a deadly sin in another. For instance:
Having one too many drinks is OK in Germany and Poland, but taboo in Italy. Italians socialize over coffee, not booze. There's a lot of Italian words (barista, venti, etc.) used at Starbuck's for a reason,
