Just wondering so when I start out doing urbex I won't get caught the first time.
Still have yet to go to a building. |

This is too vague. Each building is different.
Some things to consider:
-Buildings people go to a lot may be low on cops' priority, but they also could be high priority if they don't want a bunch of people going into
-Going in locked buildings that you have to pick a lock or break a window to get into is not only a breaking and entering charge if you get caught but also not okay, don't do it
-Active or recently abandoned buildings are more sketchy because they still may have surveillance
-Sometimes people want to repurpose a building, stay away from those.
Above all: Use good judgement. We can't tell you what kind of security a hypothetical building has. We don't have the details; you do.

Ones that are still in use and maintained are the safest.
Falls and structural failures are the biggest hazard you face in abandoned structures.

Grab a flashlight or two.
Grab a friend or two.
Grab a drink or two.
Let someone who's not coming along know what your plan is and when to expect a check-in.
Go to the thing you've been considering that you think would be the easiest/safest.
Keep your eyes open and don't do anything stupid.
Be ok with turning around and leaving if you're just not feeling it. Don't worry about looking scared - everyone who's smart was scared their first couple times.
Celebrate the rush of coloring outside the lines afterwards.
Push a little further next time.

You could always explore your own home ;P.
The only "safest" places in the sense of not getting caught that I can think of is the ruins in my state park. But, it sounds like you are more looking for buildings with a little more than just some stones archways. Other than that, buildings that are hidden in the woods usually have lower activity. At least from my own experience.

You must assume nothing is 'safe' if it's been abandoned and devoid of any routine maintenance.
As others have said, you're overthinking it. Use common sense and don't do anything stupid and you'll be relatively OK.

As several others have said, "safe" is definitely not the first word that comes to mind when talking about urbex. Assuming that your definition of safe is to not be caught, then it depends. There are some places that are commonly visited, which will often attract cops. So if you can find someplace more remote/less visited, you'll probably be safer in terms of authorities. Imo it's nothing to be afraid of; if you don't do anything stupid you should be fine. Even if there are guards around, with a big enough structure they can be avoided. But in the chance that you do get caught, it wouldn't be anything serious. I've bumped into guards that let me walk right past.

Hey man, I felt the same way when I started this. It wasn't that long ago, but I have grown so much in such a short period of time.
I always thought going places you're not supposed to go was kinda cool, but it's "against the rules" so I never tried. I'm paranoid about social conventions and being able to fit in with people in general, which also makes me very afraid about being seen (Not a bad worry in this hobby, but it can't consume you).
The biggest thing I had to learn to get into this hobby was learning to break rules. I had to accept the fact that not everyone is going to respect me for doing this, but those people do not fly like vultures above me all the time. It can take some patience, you may not do it on your first explore. Go to places you want to explore. Jump the fence, circle the property, survey the area, whatever helps you take that plunge into 'breaking the rules'.

Screw rules. That's not a concern.
The laws are. Know them for the area you plan to explore.
Avoid committing felony crimes such as B&E.
Don't commit needless crimes while there; take only pictures, leave only footprints.
Run from guards, always stop for cops.

My advice would be to familiarize yourself with the building and area during the daytime before showing up at night. The safest building is the one you're already familiar with. Also remember that daytime explorations are just as fun and safer anyways, so if you see a way in while you're there scoping it out, and feel good about it, just go for it.
One bit of advice: avoid having anything with you that makes it look like you were up to more than just exploring.. If you get caught exploring and the po po find a can of spray paint in your bag you will be arrested even if you didn't spray anything. Same goes for lock picking devices, drug paraphernalia, weapons, etc. Stay calm, follow their instructions, be respectful and they just might let you off with a warning.

Agreed completely. As long as the drinks are non-alcoholic and have decent hydrating qualities.
Backup flashlights are an excellent idea too. And friends are an even better idea!
