Burninating the countryside

I drove up to Fairbanks last week, intending to take a side trip through Dawson in the Yukon rather than the straight shot up the Alaska Highway from Haines. Unfortunately as we got into Canada the smoke from forest fires became really really thick, and between the terrible visibility and a desire to meet some people elsewhere we never made it to Dawson. We did get time to stop at one abandoned mine along the way, and check a few abandoned cabins. There are quite a few little roadside ghost towns along the Alaska Highway in both countries, but they're the type where you might encounter one last nutty resident with a shotgun (I should know, since that's the kind of place I grew up ). We drove past some fresfly burned areas and saw lots of fire crews and a few flaming trees along the way. Just north of Fairbanks we looked at another larget burned area, a lot of trees and a few cabins were lost, fortunately no one was injured and none of the dredges or mines seem to have burned.

In other news, I've been playing around with my CompactFlash GPS unit for my pocketPC, I bought some nav software for my Dell Axim and will probably get a PC program if I ever get my new laptop (trying to avoid an anti Best Buy rant here, their shipping department is retarded). The gps is fun and nerdy as hell, but hopefully I can get out and play with it this weekend on some back roads and bike trails.
