This industrial marine dry-dock facility filed for bankruptcy in mid 2013 after owing its 208 creditors more than $12 million.
Started in 1946 the company concentrated on repair work, then started lengthening & rebuilding vessels in 1947. The facility employed more than 1,000 in its prime. By 2006, it laid off its last 35 employees before another company came in and bought and restructured the company.
I have read that In September 2014, a new company had purchased the Dry Docks for a price of $12.62 per sq. ft. or $1,350,000.
The purchase involved the sale of a heavy manufacturing facility, formerly used as an industrial ship repair facility with up to 62’ clear ceiling height and office space.
There are definitely still some missing pieces to this story as one building on the property is surrounded by demo fence and another large building is entirely empty.
The dry-dock has a johnny on the spot in it, some welding equipment and a radio that was actually playing while I was down there. Another building on site had power and some new looking vehicles inside, I decided not to venture into that building.
I did spot one security guard parked at his post, but he didn't move during the time I was there.

nice work! I tried to get in there recently, and we were approached by a security car literally before getting within 50ft of the fence. Must have just been bad luck, as I think he was simply doing his "rounds".

Huge sites like this can be hard to evade detection in and difficult to captured well with images.
Well framed/composed, squared off shots; again always a pleasure to see here
They turned Chester Ship Building into a bloody worthless casino... it had the only wet/dry dock on the Delaware river.
Be nice if this would remain a shipyard...

Thanks man, I think I heard that story from the guy you probably went with. Ya, he stayed put the whole time..I kept looking over to see if the car moved. Quite a few cameras around the site but I tried to calculate every move based on their direction and what cover I could find. It's definitely worth a visit!

Thanks once again for the compliments. Many parts are fairly wide open to the road or in the line of sight to the security booth, so yes it was a bit of a challenge, but a fun one nonetheless!

Holy crap, I somehow expected that you had walked around in the evening, not in broad daylight. And I never expected to see shots right down in the holding areas! That was daring as heck.
I covered this site as a security guard for a few weeks in the early 90s after a crane collapsed and killed the operator. It was eerie because the body couldn't be removed until the Ministry finished investigating... I had to do rounds over by the crushed remains of the crane with a big blue tarp covering the human remains.
I just went searching for it in another window and there are about a dozen hits for a crane collapse here in 2008 that killed a guy! None of the articles even mention the previous death at the same site. In fact, I can't find mention of it anywhere on Internet. It was around 1993-94; crazy that the previous accident has disappeared into history, especially with a virtual repeat of it a decade and a half later.

God damn I wish we had this kind of location here in Toronto, this is some serious site... Funny how I forget how actually deep these kind of docks are. I wonder how they drain all that water since it's already at sea level, did you explored down in the drain hole? (Picture 28 - 30). It would be interesting to figure out the pumping mechanism that sucks out all of the water.
