I'm heading to Philly on the 22nd and I'm trying to find places that are still accessible and still abandoned...any suggestions?

There are loads. Just drive around and you'll fall over abandonments everywhere. Be careful though as some areas of Philly are extremely sketchy.

My friend had a mugger try him in daylight as he walking down the sidewalk after running out of gas. Al left his .45 in the glove compartment. That thought would soon cross his mind... As the black dude stood in front of him demanding his money, Al improvised and knee kicked him square in the groin and didi mao the hell out of there. Leaving Mr Mugger dude crumpled on the sidewalk. It was a 'fun' day that ended ok and made a good story. Al was a Nam combat vet. Parts of PHL can be very sketchy even in daylight. PHL, city of brotherly wuv...

This is true. There are some really bad areas in north and west philly. I remember Chip R Jones had an issue leaving 12th & Pearl (Goldtex Bldg) one night. He was on the bottom floor on his way to the window to leave and someone came charging out of a side room right towards him. He pushed them away and made a bee line for the exit. I agree with randomesquephoto though. Been in some pretty bad areas of philly at all different hours and have never had even a remote issue. Although I have heard storied of others having problems. Hell, spent many nights at the old Edison High school(The Hood School) at 8th & Lehigh in arguably one of the worst neighborhoods in the city. It was very common to hear gunshots in the surrounding hood while you were in there. Always thought if I was gonna have a problem it was going to be coming/going or possible inside there. Never had an issue.

I agree with you Speed PHL is certainly doable. It depends when, where and who's there. It also depends on how they perceive you. Another person I know got purse snatched twice in the same subway tunnel in a one year span. She was petite and a grand total of 61 inches tall. Even after the first time she insisted on carrying her purse... *sigh*. You need to be street smart especially in bad areas. Best to spot trouble first and have a plan. Distance means more time, more time gives you time to think and react appropriately. Know when to blow red lights and stop signs when there's people hanging there in bad sections. Don't let them come up to your car or box you in. Leave at least a car length of space of the car in front of you at all stops and have an escape path; don't box yourself in. Be aware of people around you, in the distance, and their pattern of movement, especially groups of people ie wolf packs.

Research the iconic Art Deco Chester Power Station in Chester just south of PHL on Highway 13. It was a show case generating station of the East coast; it's stunning inside and out, it sits on the Delaware river. It was converted to an office building in 1996 or so. They retained some of the original equipment and architecture including the control room which is still intact, I believe. The craftsmanship is beautiful. The huge brass doors used in the movie 12 monkeys are there and fully preserved. It should be open to the public; call first.

This...Essex and I have a fairly amusing story of accidentally-on-purpose driving through one of the really bad hoods there.

Ha, yeah, accidently..... We were coming from a statistically worse area anyway, and we were on foot with our cameras. Most of Kensington just looks scary in daylight. Junkies can't do much to you in a car when you never actually stop. Edit: funny enough this is pretty much exactly what my father taught me when he took me down to Newarks south ward to learn to drive a manual transmission.
